Humming Along for GDP174

So many ideas ran through my head for this week’s oval-focused sketch at Global Design Project. There are so many ways to use an oval – I decided to let the oval play a background to the gorgeous hummingbird in Humming Along Bundle. Bright, bold colors were a perfect contrast to a black oval. Here’s my card for this week’s sketch challenge:

GDP174Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Hummingbirds & Hibiscus. Although I live inside the Atlanta city limits, I am surrounded by beautiful trees and wildlife. During Spring and Summer, we hang a hummingbird feeder outside our picture window so we can enjoy the buzzing little birds – such fun to watch them zip in and zip away. Here’s a picture I took of our view over the summer: view from my windowOn the other side of the deck from the hummingbird feeder is a beautiful hibiscus plant – while the hummers tend to enjoy the nectar from the feeder, the flowers are a sweet temptation.  hibiscusImagine my surprise when I saw both the hummingbird and hibiscus paired with one another in the Humming Along Bundle – what fun! Here’s a look at the bundle:Humming Along Bundle, Stampin' Up! 150621
  • The Oval. I stamped the hibiscus with Whisper White Craft Ink and sprinkled it with White Stampin’ Emboss Powder. I heat-set the flower with my Heat Tool. The black oval with a white flower image was a great contradiction to the colorful bird. I stamped the sentiment (from Butterfly Gala stamp set) on a strip of Whisper White cardstock and cropped it with the same Oval die I used to crop the flower. Here’s a look at how I lined it up to crop it before gluing it onto the black oval:Cutting a sentiment with an Ovals Collection Framelit Die, Stampin' Up!, Brian King
  • Bright Colors. My Google searches of hummingbirds showed lots of green birds and lots of blue birds. Some had pink bellies or necks, while others did not. I decided to mix all the best attributes and my artistic license to build a hummingbird with all three colors. Here’s a closer look of the bird colored with Stampin’ Blends:Humming Along Bundle, Butterfly Gala, Stampin' Up!, Brian KingIf you like this combination of Balmy Blue, Granny Apple Green and Poppy Parade as much as I do, please save this:Stampin' Up! 10. Oh, how I love to see these gorgeous signs of Spring and Summer once again!!! Especially now that we up here are in the awful grip of this Polar Vortex, with -20 degree temperatures. Your card totally sends a reviving wave of warmth and beauty through us during this awful freezing spell and it reminded me what Hal Borland said:

    “No Winter lasts forever…..
    No Spring skips its turn.”

The views from your porch are gorgeous and so inviting, thank you for sharing, my dear.
    XO
