Before I share today’s project for this week’s Global Design Project CASE the Designer Challenge, I want to say thank you to the GDP team for selecting my Back to School project as a winner. I was a design team member for many years at GDP, so this is the first time I’ve been selected as a winner. What an honor! I don’t play along with online challenge to win (I love the challenge), but it’s always nice to be recognized. If you missed that project you can see it here.
Today’s project is my card for this week’s Global Design Project challenge – a CASE of a card by Su Mohr. What fun! I used some new and some carryover products to make a fun Christmas card. Here’s my card:
Here’s the banner for the challenge that inspired my card, along with Su’s inspiration project:
When we CASE (Copy and Share Everything or Copy and Selectively Edit), we find inspiration in a project – theme, color combinations, layout, products used – and create our own project by making changes to make it our own. When CASEing, it’s important to give credit to the original designer – it doesn’t take away from your project at all.
You might not immediately see how Su’s project inspired me – they are so very different. Like Su, I layered a focal panel in the center of my card with a tag that extends off the side of the panel. I cropped two tags for the focal panel of my card and layered my sentiment there. The cropped reindeer is an added accent.
Tips, Tricks and Reminders
- Wishes & Wonder Bundle. The Wishes & Wonder Bundle features some of our favorite images from Christmas – a sleigh, reindeer and tags for gift-giving. There are also some gorgeous sentiments in the Wishes & Wonder stamp set. Here’s a look at the Wishes & Wonder Bundle, which includes the Wishes & Wonder stamp set and coordinating North Pole Wonder Dies:
While my card is a beauty (that’s what you were thinking, right?), I’m gobsmacked by the gorgeous layering of this card sample by Stampin’ Up! design artists:
- Two Tags. Did you notice the decorative zigzag tag in the North Pole Wonder Dies? When I couldn’t decide if I wanted to showcase the tag in Night of Navy or in Pretty Peacock, I decided to cut out both to decide. In the end, I decided to layer them together on my card front. What fun! The coordinating zigzag circle and inside circle are also from the same set of dies. In case you missed it, there’s also a reindeer on this card. I cropped this textured deer with Soft Suede cardstock and the North Pole Wonder Dies. Love it!
I stamped “from our house to yours” with Night of Navy ink on the Very Vanilla circle – a perfect size for the overlapping deer. The sentiment is from the Itty Bitty Christmas stamp set.
- Sophisticated Color Combination. When I started this card, I was going to showcase one of the flashy, copper-foiled patterns in the Brightly Gleaming Specialty Designer Series Paper. I decided, instead, to showcase a gorgeous, understated pattern that mixes Night of Navy and Pretty Peacock. Love those two together! Here’s a look at the colors and patterns in the Brightly Gleaming Specialty Designer Series Paper:
The third color in my card, Soft Suede, was used to crop my deer. Since the deer is the focal point of the card, I added a Soft Suede card base to make him a stronger focus. If you love this mix of Soft Suede, Pretty Peacock and Night of Navy as much as I do, I hope you will save this for future reference:
Bundles: Wishes & Wonder Stamp Sets: Wishes & Wonder, Itty Bitty Christmas Papers: Brightly Gleaming Specialty Designer Series Paper, Soft Suede, Night of Navy, Pretty Peacock, Very Vanilla Inks: Night of Navy Accessories: North Pole Wonder Dies, Stampin’ Dimensionals
I hope you’ll pop over to the Global Design Project site to see the cards by the design team members and to play along with this week’s challenge.
Thanks for stopping by today!
Brian

Yes, I noticed the pretty deer first but then I noticed the tags and circle have the same zigzag edge. I love the colors and all the elements you used for this beautiful card. I love you tell us the thought process you go through to bring a card to life. Enjoy your day!
Thanks, Hilda! I’m so happy to share my thought process – it’s fun for me to put it into words. Thank you, as always, for your wonderful feedback. ♥
Really nice color combos- and I love the card I don’t want to add that bundle to my wish list but this card….
Thanks, Cyndi! I love these colors, too – grateful for this paper to bring them together for me. 🙂 I’ve had this bundle but just used it – already planning my next project with it. 🙂
LOVE the dual tags on this card Brian.
Oh what a handsome card ! So striking with the colors and Reindeer and the design element of the zig zag edging on the tags ! I agree with Hilda in I also enjoy reading your design decisions . Sometimes just a subtle touch of something can make a card EYE CANDY to me !!
Congrats on your WIN ! What took them so long ???
Thanks, Sonny! I like to teach cardmaking – and the best way I know to do it is to walk people through my choices or mistakes. ♥ So glad you like it. While I was a team member all those years, I couldn’t win. 🙂
Brian, yes, as a matter of fact, that’s exactly what I was thinking, the card is gorgeous! The colors are non-traditional but so perfect!
Brian, congratulations on your GDP submission. It was a very special card. Today’s card is amazing too! I love the tags in the center and the color combination is beautiful. I would describe this card as “striKINGly” beautiful!!
Thank you so much, Debbie! I was so in love with this mix of colors that I almost couldn’t focus on the layout of the card. 🙂 So glad you like it! ♥
Congrats, BK. Diggin’ the layered tags on today’s design.
Thanks, Mary! I love this tag.
I was so happy to see your card, Brian! Love how you used the deer. Thanks for “caseing” my card!
Thanks, Su! Your card was a great inspiration. So glad you like it. ♥
BIG congratulations to you Brian! Gorgeous card but to me the thing that brought all the lovely colors together was the thin Night Of Navy borders.
They made everything else stand out so beautifully. Your layering is always so amazing. Love it.
Thank you so much, Grace! ♥
Congrats Brian! A well deserved win! I’m really loving your card here; simple yet classy. I do have this bundle, but have yet to open it. What is WRONG with me? (no time…always ready…but never enough time). I think I’ll have to remedy that. Great card; love the colors!
Thanks so much, Bobbi! You will have fun with it – I’m certain of that. ♥
Hooray for the win! And your tag card is so elegant…..loving the blue!
Thanks, Linda! I’m such a fan of Pretty Peacock with Night of Navy. Glad you like it, too.
