I loved everything about yesterday’s Bright & Bold Be Inspired Blog Hop – so many amazing projects from my talented team members! If you missed it, I hope you’ll take a look – you can start here.
To keep the party going, I’m sharing another bright-and-bold project today – a stain glass butterfly built with the same vibrant colors and Designer Series Paper I featured yesterday. There are so many fun details on this card, so hang on to your hat! Here’s my card:
A SECOND CHANCE AT INSPIRATION
This card actually started as an idea for yesterday’s hop. Midway through, I abandoned it (I just wasn’t feeling it). But the next day, I spotted the half-finished butterfly on my desk and saw it with fresh eyes. With a little more time and creativity, it came together beautifully – and I’m so glad I gave it a second chance.
THE STAR OF THE SHOW
The butterfly at the heart of my card is cropped with the Beautiful Butterflies Dies, part of the returning Beautiful Butterflies Bundle. Even though it’s a returning bundle, it’s still offered with a bundle discount – yay!
Here’s a look at the Beautiful Butterflies Bundle:
The colors are pulled directly from the bold, spotted patterns in the Turtle-y Cute Designer Series Paper. These playful prints are the perfect backdrop for a bright, stained-glass look. Here’s a look at the colors and patterns in the Turtle-y Cute Designer Series Paper:
Here’s a closer look at the vibrant, dotted panel and the stain glass butterfly I created on today’s card:
HOW I BUILT THE STAIN GLASS BUTTERFLY
Here’s a closer look at the steps behind this fun design:
- Cropped the butterfly with Poppy Parade cardstock to create the “frame.”
- Flipped it over on a Silicone Craft Mat, then added strips of tape across the back (the mat makes it easy to lift up and flip over).
- Cropped the butterfly again in Darling Duckling cardstock, popped out select pieces, and placed them onto the taped frame with tweezers.
- Repeated step 3 with additional colors – Pool Party, Flirty Flamingo, and Pretty in Pink – one at a time.
- Cropped the body in Basic Black cardstock and glued it to the center.
- Popped up the finished butterfly with three Mini Stampin’ Dimensionals.
It was a bit time-consuming, but so worth it – and honestly, really fun! With so many detailed dies in our collection, the possibilities for similar stained-glass effects are endless.
What do you think – would you try your hand at making a stain glass butterfly?

Beautiful fun butterfly! Anyone receiving would surely keep it on display for a long time!
Thanks, Barbara! I had fun with it – it will be difficult to part with this one. 🙂
A “cloisonne” classic! Pretty!
Beautiful butterfly with bright colors! I love butterflies, and haven’t seen many in my yard this year.
Thanks Stella! We’ve seen more this year than in years past – perhaps your NC butterflies are over here in GA this year? 🙂
Wow Brian!
What a beautiful card!
Glad you gave it a 2nd chance.
Thanks, Dawn! Maybe I was too far into it to just toss it. Glad I gave it a second look. 🙂
Your card was the first thing I saw with my morning coffee. WOW! What a stunning card! I bet the butterflies in the other colors you cut would be similarly beautiful.
Thanks so much, Vickie! I’m happy to share this project with you over coffee. ♥
You are so the King of paper piecing! Beautiful butterfly and fun card!
Thanks, Windy! This was a fun, patience-testing project. So glad you like it as much as I do. ♥
Beautiful card, Brian! I love your paper-piecing. Remember, a few years ago Stampin Up had a beautiful rose die, and I loved paper-piecing it. I’ll have to try this butterfly soon. Enjoy your day!
Hilda, I had a friend who paper pieced me a card with that die as a birthday card, I still have it on my wall-o-cards. It is one of my favorites!!!
So sweet and special to you, Cindie. It is definitely a keeper. Thanks for sharing with me.
Love!
I DO remember that, Hilda! It was a fun project – I hope you’ll give it a try. ♥
Let’s see… yet another design technique of which you are The King. Layers upon layers, color combo collections, unexpected DSP use/parings, intricate paper piecing…yup.
Gobsmacked again!
Awww…thanks so much, Linda! It always makes me happy when I “get” you. ♥
