DAY 2 of Ms. Goldie’s 100th Birthday Card

Welcome to DAY 2 of Ms. Goldie’s 100th birthday card! This card is so special it took me two days to share everything I wanted to share about it.

The background panel on my card is not Designer Series Paper—yet every element I used to make it is available from Stampin’ Up!. Intrigued?! Today’s post gives you a step-by-step walkthrough of how to create your own faux wood panels.

First, here’s another look at yesterday’s card (if you missed the details, click here):

How I Made the Faux Wood Background

The base of the panel is a white cardboard backing from a 12” x 12” pack of Designer Series Paper. The glossy side makes a perfect foundation for this inked-up technique.

  1. I used my Paper Trimmer to score lines every 1/2”.

  2. With a Smoky Slate ink pad, I swiped across the panel in the direction of the score lines.

  3. I followed up with a lighter swipe of Gray Granite and then an even lighter swipe of Basic Gray.

That’s it. Really. Simple, fun, and full of texture.

I shared this technique with my last Super-Awesome group, and they LOVED it. It’s easy to do and such a great way to add personality to your cards.

Helpful Tips for Creating a Faux Wood Background

Here are some tricks to keep in mind when you try this out:

  • The ink will look too light at first—don’t panic! It takes time to soak into the glossy paper. Let it sit (overnight, if you can) and watch it transform into beautiful woodgrain.

  • The ink dries slowly on glossy paper. If you can’t wait, wipe it gently with a paper towel to help blend the ink. Experiment—you’ve got extra backing sheets, right?

  • If your wood panels end up too dark, swipe a little white ink across the surface for instant texture.

  • I designed Ms. Goldie’s card with gray tones, but this looks gorgeous in browns too. Try Crumb Cake, Pecan Pie, and Early Espresso for a warm, woodsy look.

Your Turn!

I hope you’ll give this a try! It’s an easy technique with a gorgeous result! Try cherry wood with a little Cherry Cobbler or painted wood with other colors you love. I predict you’ll have loads of fun using those DSP packings. 🙂

Thanks for stopping by today!
