Jeremiah and I met his family yesterday to celebrate the late-June birthdays of Chelsea (his sister) and Jake (her husband). Despite the incredible heat, we sat on the patio of a little restaurant overlooking Lake Lanier. Did I mention it was really hot outside?
We thought a movie theater gift card would make the perfect gift for Chelsea, Jake and Ivy to enjoy a family movie night together. We picked up an AMC Theatres gift card at Publix, and I immediately started designing a birthday card to match its fun, movie-inspired energy. Here’s the card I made:
The front of the card features dies from two bundles – one that creates a bold birthday greeting and another with film strips that hint at the surprise tucked inside. ♥
The “film strip” I used is technically camera film, but who’s going to tell me otherwise? Here’s a look at the Capturing Smiles Bundle:
I also love the variety of layered greetings in the Words & Wishes Bundle. The oversized “happy” and “birthday” completely fill the card front, and I think they make such a fun statement. Here’s a look at the Words & Wishes Bundle:
Hidden inside is the movie gift card. Here’s a look:
To create the gift card holder, I started with a 5-1/2″ x 10-1/2″ piece of Thick Basic White Cardstock. I scored it at 4-1/4″ and 8-1/2″, creating a small interior flap to hold the gift card. I secured the sides of the flap with Tear & Tape to form a pocket, tucked in a little note stamped with a sentiment from the Exciting Times Stamp Set and mounted the gift card inside.
Since we purchased the gift card at Publix, it came attached to a cardboard carrier. At first I thought that might make the project more difficult, but it actually inspired the final design. I simply taped the receipt to the back of the cardboard carrier and folded it in half:
Because the card sits slightly away from the cardboard carrier, it creates the perfect little display for the gift card when the card is opened.
Such fun! As you’ve probably guessed, I designed the entire project around the movie theme and the colors of the AMC Theatres gift card. To finish it off, I added a boatload of Rhinestone Basic Jewels for a little extra sparkle worthy of the big screen.

One of my favorite things about handmade cards is that they can turn even a simple gift card into something memorable. With just a few thoughtful design choices, the packaging becomes part of the gift itself. Whether you’re giving movie tickets, a favorite restaurant gift card or another special surprise, I hope this project inspires you to think beyond the envelope and create something that’s just as fun to open as it is to receive.
