Three Things I Like: Katie Ferguson

Happy Friday, everybody! After the holiday yesterday, many of us are in for a “short week” (a.k.a. one day after a holiday but before the weekend) today. Does it get any better than that? Well, I guess a four-day weekend would have been nice, but I’m not one to complain, so I’m happy with my “one-day short week.”

I want to share a card designed by Katie Ferguson, a member of my Stampin’ Up! team.  After you’ve had a chance to gawk at it, I’m going to tell you three things I like about her card (that’s right – I’ll limit my likes to three). Katie drove to Atlanta from Alabama two weekends ago for the shoebox swap and brought the pieces-parts for this gorgeous card:Notable Notions, I Am Me Designer Series Paper, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, by Katie Ferguson

Three Things I Like:

  • Sunburst. I really like the sunburst technique. What a great way to showcase some beautiful Designer Series Paper! I really like Katie’s choice of I Am Me Designer Series Paper here. The colors and patterns work so well with this technique that allows both sides of the paper to shine. The Whisper White Background of I Am Me also allows the card to stay bright and bold.
  • You Make Me Smile. I feel like I share this with you two or three times a week, but I really love unique layering of sentiments. I love to find an unexpected layer that works so well. Katie did that here. See the Calypso Coral layer behind the “You Make Me Smile” sentiment, the one with the little stripes? Do you recognize it? Didn’t think so. It’s from Delicate Doilies. When punched with a 1-3/8″ circle punch, you can crop off the doily outsides, leaving only the stripes and circle behind the button. Brilliant! I love to play with shapes and punches, so you’ll be seeing this from me again.  Katie also uses a Sweet Buttons Embosslit to create the textured circle in the center of the sentiment.  One more thing about the sentiment (I’m really cramming a lot of “likes” into this bullet point, I know) – I really like the placement of the sentiment.  Katie could have chosen to center it at the base of sunburst, but the placement of the sentiment to the side is wonderful.  Here’s a closeup: Notable Notions, Delicate Doilies, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, by Katie Ferguson
  • Light Texture.  The sunburst and the sentiment are the star of the show on Katie’s card, but it’s important to point out another really great part of this card.  For the base of the card front, Katie chose a panel of So Saffron card stock that she embossed with the Fancy Fan Textured Impressions Embossing Folder.  Here’s why I think these choices were inspired:  the light-colored panel at the base allows the rest of the card to explode, while the texture adds some unexpected character to the soft base.

I think you’d agree with me when I say this card is beautiful.

Stamp Sets: Notable Notions Inks: Basic Gray Papers: I Am Me, So Saffron, Whisper White, Pool Party, Basic Gray  Accessories:  1-3/8″ Circle punch, 1-1/4″ Circle punch, Sweet Buttons Embosslits, 1/8″ Mini Brads, Fancy Fan Textured Impressions Embossing Folder, Scallop punch, Stampin’ Dimensionals

This card is beautiful indeed Brian. I was wondering how did she cut the pieces of DSP so perfectly even in an angle like that to make them fit in the finish card, the sunburst design is wonderful and very artistically done, thank you for sharing it with us Brian.

  6. Gorgeous! love this card!

  7. Wow! Super fun card…love it!!! Katie did a great job with this card!!!

  8. I love the way the SU DSP coordinates so well, so this card it so interesting. I can use small bits of every piece of a set of DSP to showcase it to perfection.

  9. I LOVE patterned paper and get overwhelmed with decided which pattern to use! Decisions, Decisions! I LOVE this technique because I get to use multiple pattens and even both sides and takes a lot of the frustration out of the equation for me! It is a total win-win for me!

  12. Love the card! Is there a trick to laying out the sunburst? How do you go about measuring and cutting the pieces? Perhaps a video or tutorial would help clueless people like me? Thanks!
