Recycling with The Paper Players

This week, the Paper Players are challenging us to recycle – to use a recycled or re-purposed item on our project.  Talk about a racing mind!  I thought about every possible thing I could use on my card – from an old t-shirt to every piece of garbage I’ve seen for a week.  What a fun challenge from Nance Leedy!  Here’s my project:Soft Masculine

And here’s the badge from The Paper Players challenge:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders:

  • My Recycled Feature. OK, so I admit that a card with nine layer of card stock is not the most Earth-friendly card ever made.  One layer of this card, though, was pulled from the trash, remodeled and then featured on this card.  The three letters on the front are cut from the front cover on my Print Poetry Designer Series Paper Stack.  I created the wood-like texture on the white side of the cover with several of my Classic Stampin’ Pads before cropping them with my Typeset Alphabet Bigz.  Looks like little wooden blocks, huh?  I’ll be sharing the technique on tomorrow’s blog post, so please come back.  Soft Masculine
  • Soft Masculine.  So many card makers are drawn to masculine cards because they find masculine cards hard to recreate.  Here’s a hint: masculine doesn’t have to be dark and rigid.  I loved this Epic Day Designer Series Paper in an antiqued Pool Party.  While I added brown (Soft Suede) layers, I accented the bold sentiment with soft seam binding ribbon and brads (Very Vanilla).  At first, I added dark metallic brads but decided they were too dark for this card – they detracted from the focal point (the three letters).  In the end, I am happy with this Soft Masculine result.
  • Keep it simple.  I played around with additional sentiments like “happy birthday, DAD” or “happy father’s day, DAD” or “#1 DAD”.  At the end of the day, I felt like “DAD” said enough.

Papers:  Soft Suede, Baja Breeze, Very Vanilla, Epic Day Designer Series Paper, Cardboard front of Designer Series Paper Stack  Inks:  Sahara Sand, Soft Suede, Early Espresso, Whisper White Craft  Accessories:  Seam Binding Ribbon, Typeset Alphabet Bigz die, Stampin’ Dimensionals

  1. Awesome idea! Thanks for sharing.

  2. What a nice card and I like that it just says DAD….. this challenge today is a cute idea …I like to repurpose ….I really get a kick out of left over card stock and dsp especially now since the Mini Curly label punch came into my life . But , the real challenge is finding something that isn`t card making stuff to recycle …I do that a lot with the clear plastic packaging . Now I can see where my day is going …to find something to recycle on a card !! btw..it`s going to be 70 degrees here today … yay Spring !!

  3. Awesome job! Love the “blue shirt” pattern you found in Epic Day DSP!

  4. I love the colors as well as the simplicity of your card although I know there is more to it than meets the eye. I also love how DAD just stands out without over powering your card. Job well done Brian!! I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s posting to see this technique!

  5. I really like you card Brian!! Awesome!!

  6. Talk about focal points that POP (no pun intended LOL)! Great card Brian, guy cards are hard for me so I always appreciate it when I see one I really like. Got my order in with “free shipping”. Killed two birds with one stone so to speak. Stocked up on retiring paper colors that I love and saved a bit of moula for my next order.

  7. Whoa Baby! Nine layers! I love the look. It’s a perfect Father’s Day card.

  8. Great card and very creative. Love how you did the woodgrain on the DAD letters.

    • Thank you, JoAnn! I appreciate it. I am working on a video tutorial that will show how I made the feaux wood look and will be posting it tomorrow. Please come back and check it out!

  9. Awesome, as usual! Can’t wait to see the video tomorrow on how you did those letters! –Terri O

  10. Creative genius! The single word says it all and your beautiful subtle colors are wonderful!!! Geat job!

  11. LOVE it, Brian! Perfect card for the challenge….I totally thought those letters were made from wood sheets. Love the soft colors for a masculine card and your perspective on what makes a masculine card is always welcome! Thanks for rockin’ my challenge this week!

  12. Totally cool. Who would of thought? Only you of course. Great job thinking outside the box. 🙂

  13. Will be back for the technique. Love it!

  14. What a great card Brian. It really jumps out at me. I love the bold letters next to the fine lines of the layers. Just beautiful!
    Inky hugs, Pauline

  15. All the layers work so well with the softer DSP and the great faux wood letters. Though you used a lot of cardstock, you still got the recycling handled with the letters. Clever as usual. I woke up in the night, i-Pad was on the nightstand and I watched your video tutorial – I think I was #5 to view it so I am not so embarrassed to admit watching it in the middle of the night – thanks for sharing how you made the faux wood – very effective.

  16. Fabulous, Brian! I LOVE the way you positioned the brads to accent the “Dad”!

  17. Clever idea and fun video! 🙂
