You in the World – a Single Layer Card for The Paper Players

Ann Schach is hosting a One Layer Card Challenge this week at The Paper Players – all paper and ink, and not a thing more. It sounds simple, but it’s not as easy as you might think. My very good friend sent me into a tailspin with this challenge. As soon as I read the challenge Sunday morning, a thousand ideas littered my brain, but I couldn’t nail one down. I was stumped. I pulled out almost every stamp set and every ink pad I own – they were piled around my workspace as I churned through sheets and sheets of paper, unhappy with what I was making. I couldn’t do it – well I couldn’t do it Sunday night. I pouted a little bit and put my stamp sets back on the shelf, deciding to sleep on it for the night.

When I arrived home from work yesterday, there was a brown box on the front steps with the words “Stampin’ Up!” on the outside. I immediately knew what was inside the box and that I would use it to complete this challenge. My World Map background stamp had arrived and it would follow me to the Fungeon to make this card:World Map, Chalk Talk, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, PP159

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

I’m sharing three ‘ings about how I made this card:

  • Masking. There are two elements of masking on the center of this card. First I punched an oval from copy paper with my Extra-Large Oval punch. I added 2-Way Glue Stick to the back of the oval and let it dry (that makes the adhesive temporary so I can pull it back up clean as a whistle – well, as clean as a whistle that’s clean). I placed the oval in the bottom, right corner of the card center and then masked the sides of the card with Post-It tape. I stamped the map and lifted the tape. Product Image
  • Bordering. Just because this is a one layer card doesn’t mean it has to LOOK like one layer. Once the inside of the card was dry, I placed the Post-It tape on the inside of the card, allowing a thin layer around the edges (one side at a time) and sponged the outsides with Midnight Muse. To look at the card, you’d think I’ve layered the Very Vanilla on Midnight Muse cardstock, but alas I did not.
  • Framing. I got a pretty clean stamp with the World Map, but I still wanted to frame the image. With the thin point of my Midnight Muse Stampin’ Write Marker and a ruler, I created a thin, double line border around the image. I allowed the lines to remain uneven to create an architectural look around the map.

  3. Wow! Your masking worked well, that Midnight Muse did not bleed one bit into the Very Vanilla card! Love it! Especially your drawn in lines, it adds contrast and I like how they are uneven giving me even more eye candy to enjoy on a one layer card! You did it!
