A Birthday Card for My 5 Year Old & a VIDEO

While the rest of the world is engrossed in fun Halloween festivities – the children, the candy, the costumes – I will spend my evening tonight with a big bowl of candy and a freaked out cat.  I will be handing out candy to the kiddos who stop by, and Bandit does not take well to a ringing doorbell.  I will forgive his scaredy catedness (that IS a valid term) because today is ALSO Bandit’s 5th birthday.

I’m not a crazy, crazy cat person (I don’t even like this grumpy, moody and rude 5-year-old beast very much), but I made Bandit a Halloween-inspired birthday card.  Here it is:Remembering Your Birthday, Stampin' Up!, Brian King

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Banner Kit.  Since this is a Birthday-Halloween hybrid, I featured a rosette from the Halloween Banner Simply Created Accessory Kit.  The striped ribbon and faceted button are also from the kit.  I just knew that Bandit would be fascinated with these accessories and embellishments and couldn’t wait to offer him this new “toy” – I even video taped it to catch it all for you.
  • Birthday Sentiment.  This birthday sentiment is from Remembering Your Birthday.  While the sentiment is adorable and wispy when stamped in [let’s say] pink, the sentiment looks fabulously spooky stamped in black.
  • Color Balance.  The rosette features Summer Starfruit with dashes of Basic Black and Pumpkin Pie.  As a result, I pulled the black and orange into the background of the card with just a thin, thin slice of the yellow.  See it?  In the end, I think all three colors are perfectly balanced on Bandit’s card.

No tricks, just treats.  As a special treat for you, I filmed Bandit’s introduction to his birthday card (I gave it to him last night).  I wanted to record Bandit tearing this card to shreds as my little gift to him, so I propped the card up in his favorite window (this is where he has the best view of the squirrels and falling leaves).  It only took him moments to pop up into the window to meet the card.  Beware…this might be the most interesting video you have ever seen…
So, maybe it didn’t turn out like I wanted, but did you notice (a) how big this cat is and (b) that he’s wearing a Halloween scarf?

Happy Halloween, my friends!

Brian

  1. So funny!

Even if he didn’t appreciate the card, we all do!

(And what a beautiful view from that window)

  2. I’m a cat lover, but I have to disagree with Bandit, I think the card is gorgeous! : )

  3. You’re too funny! I enjoyed the re purpursed Banner Acessories on this card and the cute video! Happy Birthday Bandit!

  4. Your card is very nice but I think too “old” for 5 year old. I would really to know the sizes of your cards.

    • Hey Karen, I just wanted to make sure you saw this card was ridiculously for a 5 year old cat. Bandit is really very sophisticated and wise for 5. 🙂 This card is 5-1/2″ x 5-1/2″.

  5. silliness…great card – as usual!

  6. Good Morning Brian, yesterday when you said it was someone’s birthday today, I thought it was going to be your birthday! We have a dog and a cat too. Can’t say I made them a card, but we definitely bought “doggy” ice cream for his birthday. The card is beautiful. I love it. 🙂

  7. Happy Halloween to you two !!! Love it …and how handsome is your furry housemate with his card and scarf ! You really went all out on this card considering you say you aren`t hopelessly in love with him. Great Halloween entry … Cats and Halloween just go together don`t they ? And just be glad he doesn`t bark every time the bdoor bell rings !!! Just saying ……

What a fantastic card for such a handsome boy!! I did notice (a) what a nice size he is, (b) what a super-snazzy Halloween scarf he has on, and (c) what a very lucky guy he is to have such a great view, an awesome card, and a sweet owner who knows exactly what he needs on his birthday!!! TFS Brian!!

  9. Oh my goodness Brian, that is precious, awesome, FABULOUS!!!!! Love that video, until now, we only saw Bandit on a couple of pictures but this is 100% x 2 better!!!!! C’mon, you can’t expect us to believe you are “not” a cat person and that you “don’t even like” this gorgeous cat! It’s very clear to me that you do, in a big way, otherwise you wouldn’t have “dressed” him up with his Halloween scarf, you wouldn’t even have told us today is his 5th. birthday and you wouldn’t have made this fantastic card for him. He even thanked you after you wished him a happy birthday when he went to sniff his card and jumped down to the floor, we all heard it!!
Thank you for sharing this short but fantastic moment in sweet, lovable Bandit’s life, he is one lucky, lucky kitty.
Happy Halloween to both of you!

  11. LOL! I love the video!! He is such a sweet cat, I don’t why you pick on him so much! I do love his card and yes, if he attacked it that would have been great! Happy Birthday Bandit!! 🙂

  12. You cat’s birthday is on Halloween? How cool is that! Happy Birthday, Bandit! FYI I’ll be home today with a bowl of candy and a freaked out kitty, too.

    • Sandy, I adopted him from the Humane Society on cold, February morning. They estimated he was 4 or 5 months old at the time. I proclaimed that Oct. 31 would be his birthday. 🙂

  13. This is awesome and you made my morning! Happy Halloween!

  14. Okay, he’s a typical cat…sniff the card, turn around and sneer at you, then jump down like he really doesn’t give a catnip about it. He LOVES it, I know he does…I have 3 cats and I know how their little cat minds work, ha ha. Super cute card, thanks for sharing.

    Happy Birthday Bandit!

  15. Happy Birthday Bandit. I hope your dad gets you a mousie.
Thanks for the idea of repurposing rosettes, it will be easy to make appropriate sized envelopes for them with the envelope maker!

  16. Happy birthday Bandit!!! How could you not love that face?! And I love him in his Halloween flair!

Give that kitty some nip and then see him with the card! That’ll be a show

  17. Happy Birthday, Bandit! I LOVE your Halloween scarf! Hmmm … me thinks your owner protests too much about you! I am sure you DIDN’T go shopping for your scarf … I am just sayin’ 😉
Love Bandit’s card, Brian! It might have needed some of those feathers on long pieces of baker’s twine to get him more excited, though! After all, he IS only “5”.

  18. Brian – that birthday card for Bandit is just a “knock you socks off” card. Everything about it is fabulous. The colors are so bright and joyful, the design is absolutely incredible and the color combo couldn’t possibly be any more appropriate! I just really love it!

Now, we all know that you love Bandit no matter what you say! LOL If not, pack him up and send him to me. I think he is absolutely gorgeous and would take him in a second! LOL

  19. Hilarious. I love Bandit and I live hours and hours away. How can you not love that big fluff ball.

  20. To thine own self be true says Bandit! I would have been disappointed if he loved the card! 🙂

  21. That video was hilarious! and so typically CAT!!!! Love it!

  22. Too funny Brian. You don’t know how much I needed to laugh. My cat Lucky would have knocked it on the floor!!! Thanks for sharing!

  23. That is too cute that you made a card for a cat that isn’t even so well-liked Brian! I was really hoping he was going to bat the card around, but no such luck! Happy Birthday, Bandit! (P.S. – Now I feel like a bad mom for not making my furbabies cards!

  24. Happy birthday, big-boy Bandit! Your card is awesome!

  25. Happy Birthday Bandit-that was quite a thud when you landed–perhaps a cat gym might be a great idea for a present?

  26. Sassymonkey from WA

Happy Hallo-bday bandit, your card is wonderful!
Were you upset because you didn’t get any candy?….. Don’t worry, is coming!
Love the video, and the card of course.

  27. All I can say is what a beaut or should I say boo-tiful card and what a typical reaction. We slave and slave to make the furbabies’ birthdays special and … sob, they sniff the card and walk away without a fair thee well. All kidding aside the card is gorgeous, I love rosettes, and is perfect for anyone with an October birthday. Happy Birthday Bandit you look really snazzy in your scarf, you’re a really lucky cat.

  28. Brian,If I wasn’t already attached to someone-in-stampin’ up, I would join your group….but as a compensation, I enjoy your daily blog a lot….this crazy video of Bandit made me write….you brighten my day and make me laugh…..whatever else would one want from a blog?Loyal reader, Phyllis

  29. I have to ask, Did you put catnip on the card to make Bandit interested in it? he seemed to be studying the card quite intently!! I do love the Halloween scarf on him…. and I do have to say… he is such a cutie…. so distinguished!! love the card and the Halloweenie colors!!
    HAPPY BIRTHDAY BANDIT!! 😀

  30. Well it is a very nice card! But I have to tell you that I am sitting here laughing as I read your comments about your Bandit. I have a female who looks just like your cat, at least from I can tell from the video. And she is very moody, grumpy and scared of (or at least doesn’t like) anyone else. She hisses and growls at everyone but my husband and me. And sometimes when she is in a mood, she even hits me. And believe it or not, she can hit a lot harder than you would think a cat could hit. Wonder how your cat and mine would get along? They’d probably fight a lot or go hide from each other! haha

    sorry for the long comment!

  31. Hehehe…too CUTE! Happy bday to Bandit! It’s a beautiful card!

  32. Love the combined birthday and Halloween theme. Can’t wait to see what you will create for Thanksgivukkah!

  33. I just want to cuddle the cat!!
