A lot of my friends and coworkers are having babies these days. Each deserves their own special card. When I sat down to make a baby card for Lisa and her husband, I knew I would include some adorable baby colors (and I did), but I wanted to make her card special. Although Lisa is very traditional, I included some very non-traditional colors that will help this card to stand out in the sea of congratulations cards she’ll receive.
Tips, Tricks and Reminders
- Christmas Paper on a Baby Card. As always, I set a couple of challenges for myself when I set down to make this card. I wanted to use a piece of Holiday paper in a baby card (a non-Holiday card) even if the color isn’t traditionally associated with a baby card. This piece of polka dot paper is from Season of Style DSP – the paper is Crumb Cake with Whisper White polka dots. I added soft, colorful circles inside the white dots to add flavor to the paper. More on that later.
- Colorful Polka Dots. The polka dots on this paper are approximately 3/4″ wide, so I used the circle punch from Itty Bitty Shapes Punch Pack to punch circles from some great pastels: Wisteria Wonder, Soft Sky, So Saffron, Crisp Cantaloupe and Pistachio Pudding. I simply glued them right in the center of the white polka dots for a colorful, matted look. I originally created this look on a birthday card I made for my niece earlier this year (you can see it here).
- A Mess Up. I am always willing to admit when I mess up – and I admit that I do it often. I messed up big time on this one. My original design (since when do I ever stick with my original design?) was to apply the crumb cake DSP to a Wisteria Wonder for a lovely Wisteria Wonder frame around the center piece. This is where I went wrong – when I glued the center piece to Wisteria Wonderful card base, it was as crooked as crooked could be (I want to blame to polka dots for created a visual distraction). I was left to cut the Wisteria Wonder paper from around the center piece and decided to mount it on a piece of Crumb Cake. I really liked the idea of it mounted simply on a Wisteria Wonder background, but I certainly couldn’t deliver it completely off-center. I have standards. 🙂

Great idea with the polka dotted paper. I will try this too. You are ao creative.
Adorable card – you are SO innovative!! Pinning it!
Cute as cute can be …and cute can be cute ! I can identify with the not so straight problem. I never thought about the cutting away the crooked part . TFS !
Love those colorful polka dots, what a brilliant idea! Super cute card!
I do love that particular Crumb Cake Polka Dot paper you found from Season of Style but I absolutely Love what you’ve done with it by adding color! What a precious Baby card Lisa will be adding to her Album! I think the paper snipped elephant with his tail lifting off of the card is just precious! I think I’ll pin too. 🙂
Great idea and a great tip – one-stop shopping! Your adaptation of the DSP is wonderful! Although I don’t have that DSP, I can “make” it now that you’ve planted the seed. Your recovery from a crooked matting job is much appreciated … how many times have I done that? Too many to mention! Great baby card for Lisa and her husband! Thanks, Brian.
I am totally case-ing that background…Love the idea! Thanks!
OMG! What a fabulous card!
Love this!!! Totally need to case that idea of the polka dots! You continue amaze me with your creativity!
Oh Brian – that is the cutest dang baby card I have seen in a long time! Normally polka dots are NOT my style but the ones you made are fabulous. They keep the card soft yet somewhat dramatic. Congrats on yet another stunning creation.
