A simple layout can be transformed into a magnificent work of art with the addition of several borders and layers. Today’s card is a formal beauty with many layers of cardstock that frame the card and its sentiment. Here’s today’s project:
And here’s this week’s FabFri sketch that inspired my project (click on the image below to see the other Design Team Members’ cards and to participate in this week’s challenge):
- The Sentiment. The sentiment on this card are printed in MDS. The stamp set, Cheers to Love is also available as a download, so I picked it up this week. Woo hoo! I added an ampersand and selected a font that mirrors the style of the MR and MRS. Here’s the thing: this panel looks beautiful in person – it’s solid black and blends well with the rest of the card. My super camera, though, picks up on the fact that this piece is printed on my inkjet printer. Smart camera.
- The Background. Do you recognize the background of this card? I’ll give you a hint. Oh, who am I kidding? I’ll just tell you. I printed it in MDS, too. This is one of the patterns from Back in Black, a new DSP from the 2014-2015 Annual Catalog. I changed it from Black to Soft Sky and then made it a couple of shades paler by reducing the opacity of the color (making it more see-though).
- The Layers. A wise man once said, “A simple layout can be transformed into a magnificent work of art with the addition of several borders and layers.” If you don’t remember reading that, then you aren’t paying close attention. Anyway, I think smart layering can really change the face of a card front – and it’s fun to play around with paper to create the perfect frame. Tomorrow, I’m sharing a video about matting and frames. Did your Friday just get better? 🙂

I know who that wise man was! Gorgeous card!
Beautiful card Brian. I really like how you used MDS to achieve the exact look you wanted.
Wonderful resourcefulness, when you didn’t have what you needed you made it in MDS! Great reminder to stretch our boundaries and explore. Thank you for the great idea for wedding cards, I’m going to need a few this year 🙂
That’s so funny Brian! Wise words indeed. Great card and fab use of MDS to achieve the look you were after.
Hi Brian, Like that Mr&Mrs so much. Great idea for me to remember, to go to MDS when I need a stamp I don’t have, something like this, that I only need less than once a year. Love the layering, of course. 🙂
Brian I am so proud of you for using MDS!! it’s a great option for hybrid cards. Those darn cameras sometimes.
The first thing I noticed about this card was all the layers. I love layers and a wise man has taught me that adding a few extra layers really adds a nice touch to any card.
I love the simple elegance of this card, sometimes less is more and this is a great example of that. The colors and layout is what makes it wonderful and the subtle splash of pink in that little heart is a wonderful detail.
Thank you for sharing and have a great weekend 🙂
Classic appeal! : )
Beautiful card Brian!
The layers and borders really complete a card ! You ARE wise, Brian! Great card.
Thanks for sharing !
MY my…who would have guessed that all those layers came from Brian King..LOL
This card is an absolutely beautiful and classy wedding card Brian. Only you could put together so many layers yet maintain the simplicity needed to create elegance. Fabulous job for sure!
Such a beautiful card. Thank you Brian for your creations.
Lovely and luscious layers Brian!!! My Friday TOTALLY just got WAY better!!! 😉
By the way, when I initially saw your card, at first (quick!) glance, I falsely assumed it was some kind of chalkboard technique with white embossing powder!! Boy, was I way off or what??!! 🙂 Fabulous use if MDS Brian!!!
Hi brian. I am so very new to papercrafting and found you through pinterest. Great site you have and very informative. (It’s nice that you write down every stage of the card your making, many peeps don’t and I get stuck as to what to do next) the reason for getting in touch is two things
1) to thankyou for so much inspiration and 2) what on earth does MDS mean lol. I’ve Googled it and can’t find it that way. So maybe you or one of your followers would be nice enough to explain it to me please. Thankyou soooooo much in advance.
Thanks for this sweet message, Andrea. I appreciate your kind words. I’m going to email you with further information. Thanks!
