PPA239: Like, Totally Nautical, Dude!

“That’s, like, totally nautical, dude!”  That was my very first reaction to this week’s Pals Paper Arts color challenge – Crumb Cake, Real Red and Soft Suede.  That red really popped for me against the neutrals – and lucky for me, I could pull them together with a Real Red  pattern from Maritime Designer Series Paper and a super-fun sentiment from Adventure Awaits.  Here’s my card:

Adventure Awaits, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, PPA239

And here’s the super-fun challenge banner for this week’s PPA challenge.PPA239Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • What a Grid Idea!  I love the grid that is created by the anchors in this Maritime Designer Series Paper.  While I originally thought to cover the entire background of this card with these anchors, I was too excited by the perfect border of anchors to let it go.  A couple of quick measurements, and I was able to layer my central borders to leave just this perfect square of anchors.
  • Heat Embossing.  The focal point of this card is the large-and-in-charge sentiment from Adventure Awaits.  What a great collection of inspirational sayings!  I embossed the sentiment with White Stampin’ Emboss Powder on Soft Suede card stock.  Because there’s no additional layer beneath it, I needed to make extra certain the card stock didn’t bend or warp while I heated it.  I used a metal lid (remember my shortbreads lid?) to heat both sides as I burned the white powder – what joy!  If you’d like to see my video with tips on heat embossing, click here.
  • Layering.  I love to create rich and beautiful layers on cards – that’s especially easy (and fun) on square cards.  The white layer between the Maritime Designer Series Paper and the top panel might seem like “filler,” it plays an important role in this card.  Not only does the white layer serve to create the inside border to create the grid (described above), but it creates a layer that’s brighter than the Real Red layer to pull your eye toward the sentiment.
