Merry Christmas with Delicate Ornaments Thinlits Dies

This week’s color challenge for the Pals Paper Arts offers an odd (but gorgeous) collection of colors: Chocolate Chip, Crushed Curry and Calypso Coral.  Try to say that five times fast.  While these colors are perfectly suited for a Fall-themed card, I decided to ground them in Christmas.  I do love non-traditional Christmas colors, so I was game to give these a try.  Here’s my card for this week’s challenge:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Paper Piecing.  This card is all about paper piecing (no “r” in that last word).  I ran this Delicate Ornaments Thinlits Dies through the Big Shot three times – once with Thick Whisper White cardstock, once with Chocolate Chip cardstock and once with Crushed Curry cardstock.  I popped out all the pieces on the white cutout and glued it to a Framelit of the same shape that was cropped with Calypso Coral.  I used craft tweezers to pop out the pieces I wanted from the Chocolate Chip and Crushed Curry Thinlits and dropped them in place with a small drop of glue on the Calypso Coral base.

  • Make This Card.  Earlier this year, I made a card with this same technique using the Butterflies Thinlits.  While I loved the outcome of the work, the process was so time-consuming that I implored you to NOT make that card (see it here).  THIS card, however, was quite a joy to make.  I didn’t fill in all the spots and enjoyed finding the parts of this pattern that would be right for me to fill with the different colors of paper.  I found a balance of colors that worked for me.Delicate Ornaments Thinlits Dies, Versatile Christmas, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, PPA274
  • Great Christmas Sentiments.  I love stamp sets with really great sentiments.  This year’s stamp sets have such a great variety of sentiments, but Versatile Christmas is the only one that’s dedicated SOLELY to Christmas sentiments.  I love the font on this “May all these be yours at Christmas” sentiment – the others are pretty cool, too.  If you are a fan of matching sentiments on the inside of your cards, you might want to give this set a look-see (these sentiments aren’t necessarily matched up here).

  1. Looks great, Brian! Looks an interesting colour combination. Was thinking of maybe traditional red and green with Handsome Hunter, Cherry Cobbler, and the Crushed Curry, or maybe Delightful Dijon.

  2. Soooo amazing and unique with this set – I haven’t seen anything like this!!

  3. That is so beautiful and you could use so many different color combinations. Love your ideas.

  4. Wow! Interesting color combination. I think it works!

  5. Okay I just might put in a bit of that Calypso Coral in my Thnx Gvng. card colors since I have some Crushed Curry in the mix already …..but I just can`t get as modern as you and put this color scheme in the Christmas color plan. It really is creative and original !

  6. What I really like about your web site is that you are “down to earth” with your cards. I have bought tons of Stampin Up supplies, but have made very little cards. You make it look easy and yet professional at the same time. Thank you so much. I am so glad I started following you and your blog.

    • Thank you so much for the kind compliment. I really enjoy sharing the things I figure out, so I’m glad to know that my “down to earth” style comes across that way. 🙂
