Celebrate with Cake for PPA285

For today’s Pals Paper Arts Color Challenge, Jackie Diediker (this week’s Featured Designer), chose three colors that are sure to inspire you. Watermelon Wonder, Pink Pirouette and Tip-Top Taupe.  Say that five times fast!  I was excited to play with these colors and created a soft, but fun birthday card.  Here’s my project for Jackie’s color challenge:

Party with Cake, Cherry on Top Designer Series Paper Stack, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, PPA285

And here’s the banner for the challenge that inspired my card:PPA-285-Jan28

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Coming Clean.  Jackie’s color combination incorporates Pink Pirouette.  While all of the other designers used these colors, I unintentionally used Blushing Bride to make my card.  That’s what I get for committing the colors to memory and then heading downstairs to create.  🙂  Before you come to my house with fires on sticks (like the crowd of unhappy people in Beauty & the Beast), please know that this is TOTALLY allowable by the rules of the challenge.  If you don’t have one of the colors, you can certainly replace it with a look-alike.  These are meant to be a guide or inspiration.  In conclusion, I stand behind my wrong selection of colors.
  • Second Layer.  I masked this sentiment from Party with Cake (I placed tape over the letters I didn’t want to ink up, inked up, removed the tape and stamped) to only use the second and third row of the sentiment, which reads “IT’S TIME TO CELEBRATE WITH CAKE.”  This big, bold sentiment is so much fun and so very flexible.  The last time I used it was on a project where I masked off the stamp to feature only the first and second rows (you can see that card here).  Such a fun sentiment with so many options!  I stamped and colored this sentiment twice and cropped each with different sizes of Ovals Collection Framelits.  I decided to layer them on top of each other to add depth and dimension to the card.
  • Add the Envelope.  “Celebrate with Cake” says it all, in my opinion.  I’m directing you to eat cake in celebration of your big day.  I originally wanted to fit “They Say It’s Your Birthday” from Suite Sayings on the front of the card.  No room.  How about the inside of the card?  Neh – I have a lot to write inside.  The front of the envelope seems like a great place to build a little excitement, huh?Party with Cake, Suite Sayings, Cherry on Top Designer Series Paper Stack, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, PPA285

  1. Great card, Brian. I love the colors and how you stamped on the envelope. I forget about masking off part of a stamp to make it more versatile. Thanks for jogging my memory.

  2. Simply delicious and I love how you used color for the sentiment!

  3. Love how you make 2 pieces of DSP work together so well. Awesome card Brian.

  4. You had me at layers…lol
    Love it!

  5. Lovely card Brian! The color combo is so soft and warm and I love that you stamped the outside of your envelope. I do that all the time and now several friends say they get a “Happy Birthday” from their mail delivery person, scratch their head as to how this person knows it’s their birthday, then see the envelope and laughs. Pretty cool huh?

  6. Love Grace’s comment!

I would have never known you didn’t use the proper ink colors. Love the layers and the 2 DP together. I think that sentiment looks perfect on the envelope! Great job as always

  7. Such a crisp and perfect card! I love the sentiment on the envelope. And guess what? I did the very same on the pink and I only realized it after reading your blog! Ooops!

  8. Crisp, clean and oh so cake-y! Love it!

  9. Your Birthdaycard is beautiful. I like the layers and the designpaper with the cake. I don’t see it before. Thanks for your inspiration.

  10. Such a fun card, Brian! What is a birthday without cake?

  11. You are definitely the king of sentiment cards and wonderful patterns, Brian. My favorite detail is the white on white ovals… must remember that. I am good at masking my sentiments with tape, but horrible about remembering to remove the tape, LOL… don’t do much because of that. BTW, there was one other team member who used BB instead of PP… Like you said, it is perfectly acceptable for the challenge!!!

  12. So glad you “Came Clean”. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve started out with a wrong color and had to fix it at the last minute. Love the card and bold sentiment.

Let them eat CAKE! Oops, I mean Celebrate with Cake!

  13. Too funny, your comments about the wrong colors made me LOL!

  14. Great layout and the first thing that caught my eye was the double white layering with the ovals….me have to try that! Fun card and thanks for inspiration!

  15. Brian, your card is fabulous! I love the layering and the placement you used on each part of this card. The designer series paper really pops with this sentiment! I love the crisp clean take on the colors, even the swapped color 😉
