Birthday Blooms for FabFri85

While Stampin’ Up!’s OnStage event (that’s the new name for Convention) is in full-swing in Salt Lake City this weekend, I’m home.  When they changed the time of the event, no one check with the CPA’s of the group to see if April 15 was a good travel day.  Gives me time to rest up in the evenings and get a head start on the week to come.  So, there’s my consolation prize.  🙂

Mindy Backes has created a sweet sketch for this week’s Fab Friday sketch challenge.  I created a beautiful sympathy card with beautiful colors.  Here’s my card:

Birthday Blooms, An Open Heart, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, FabFri85

And here’s the banner for the challenge that inspired my card:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Stamping Off.  This floral image is from Birthday Blooms – how lovely that a birthday image can be converted to a sympathy card, huh?  I didn’t want the flower to pop on the page, so I stamped it off once before stamping it onto the focal panel.  The oldest trick in the stamping book, right?  To stamp a lighter image, I inked up the stamp, stamped it first on scrap paper and then stamped it onto this Very Vanilla panel.  As such, the flowers are soft and the sentiment pops – just like I wanted it.Birthday Blooms, An Open Heart, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, FabFri85
  • Elements of the Sketch.  Mindy’s sketch includes a large panel, two banners and a doily.  The banners didn’t feel right on my sympathy card (I had already created the central panel and banners can seem so celebratory), so I switched them out for bands behind my flower panel.  Then, there’s the doily…I don’t use them very much, and I didn’t want a big, bold image there, so I stamped a light spattering of spots from Gorgeous Grunge.  You might not be able to see the element in the picture above, but it’s there.  Promise.  🙂
  • Color Combination.  I love the versatility of Mossy Meadow (it pairs wonderfully with almost every other color), and I will miss it dearly as it retires soon.  Mossy Meadow pairs perfectly with Blushing Bride – the two colors bring out the brown tones in each other.  Soft and rich, this color combination is perfect for a celebration or a sympathetic greeting.  If you like these colors, too, feel free to save this:Stampin' Up! 1. Brian, this card is beautiful and the sentiment is perfect.

  2. Brian, this card as well as all of your cards are gorgeous. They are simple, yet beautiful.
I am sorry you couldn’t go to the convention.

    Hi Brian,
I could not remember the type of practice or company you were in to be able to determine if this was a conflict for you. I am a retired CPA as was a CFO so I understand. I could not go either for family reasons. I was bummed because the airfare this year from Denver was really cheap.
Can’t wait to see the new products. I hope we get alcohol markers back and maybe a new tool like a minc machine. Hope we get some stitched dies too!

Your card is awesome, once again.

  4. Beautiful card. I didn’t get to go to On Stage either. I decided to save my money for going to the beach this summer – my all time favorite place to be!!

  5. Oh bummer…what were they thinking, scheduling convention at tax time, keeping demonstrator extraordinaire from attending? Geez!

Beautiful card…now you have more time to play in the fungeon. Happy Stampin’!

  6. Such a soft and pretty flower. Stunning with the sentiment layered over it.

  7. I love this color combination Brian and your card is just magnificent! So sorry you couldn’t go to the convention, I know how much you enjoy it. The bright side of the coin is now you have more money for “the big trip”. I’m sure you will be missed!

  8. So very soft and soothing, Brian. A lovely card.
Sorry they changed the schedule – you enjoy those times and add so much fun and all to them, Brian. : )

My email has changed – see below please. Thanks!

  9. Lovely card and great interpretation of this sketch. Your interpretations always show so such creativity. I learn so much from you! I’m sorry you are not able to attend SU’s convention this year as I know how much you’ve enjoyed it. Perhaps they will try a different time next year as traveling near tax day is not easy for many. Have a nice weekend!

  10. Brian, this is lovely. I sure will miss Mossy Meadow (along with a couple of others). This color combo is just perfect for a sympathy card. And I really like how you used the Gorgeous Grunge as a substitute for the doily in the sketch. Beautiful! And I’m sure you are missing On Stage and why they had it on one of the busiest days of the year for you, is beyond me! But the excitement will soon be here with the new catalog. YAY!
