Happy Retirement for FabFri107

I needed a quick-and-easy retirement card this week.  When I ran downstairs to make it, I realized it would fit perfectly with the FabFriday challenge that launches today.  Yay!  I, somehow, turned that quick-and-easy idea into a fun cardmaking session.  I reached to four new products from Stampin’ Up!’s 2017 Occasions Catalog – Urban Underground Specialty Designer Series Paper, Happy Celebrations, Milestone Moments and Urban Underground Embellishments.  What fun!  Here’s my card:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Sentiment Combo.  You know how much I love to combine a bold, printed sentiment with a beautifully scripted one.  I’ve used Happy Celebrations several times over the past couple of weeks – I love the big, bold words and the fun watercolor shapes that make up this stamp set.  Let’s just say this – I love everything about this stamp set:

For today’s card, I paired the fun “HAPPY” from Happy Celebrations with “retirement” from Milestone Moments.  That really clicked the “love” button for me.  I love the scripted look of this sentiment that doesn’t quite fit with the other words in the set (there are only a FEW people who can enjoy a “second retirement” or “third retirement.”  Right?

  • A Unique Banner.  While Mindy’s fun sketch for this challenge includes a doily beneath the focal panel, I couldn’t make the doily work with the decidedly-not-soft card I was creating.  I decided to play with this element and make a fun, unique banner.  Can you tell what I used to create the two layers the form the banner beneath the sentiment panel?  You’re right (even if you didn’t guess, I’m confident you would have gotten there)!  I used the long, zig-zagged edge of the Mini Treat Bag Thinlits to crop these banners.Happy Celebrations, Milestone Moments, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, FabFri107
  • Rich Color Combination.  My initial plan was to use Delightful Dijon, Basic Black and Basic Gray for this card.  I switched gears when I decided I needed a lighter – but still earthy – solution.  Crumb Cake gave me just what I needed to balance out the deep yellow and black.  If you like this color combination, too, please save this:Stampin' Up! 1. Such a clever way to incorporate the “teeth” into the sketch. Very handsome!

  2. I love the zigzag banner for this masculine retirement card, Brian. It is the perfect replacement for the doily in the sketch. This is a great, great card. Have a wonderful day!

  3. Come on Mint Macaron, don’t be a quitter. Stay in the game!!

  4. Brilliant idea to use the Mini Treat Bag die!

The sawtooth is such a fun touch for a masculine card vs. a doily. I used an old sanding disc yesterday on a card instead of a doily as I needed something ASAP to get in the mail . My husband leaves them all over when he is done using them.

I think I am supposedly retired but I just say I am tired…..

  6. Brian – your ability to put stamp sets together and end up with a cohesive yet beautiful card amazes me. This card is a delight and so are you. Thank you Mary for giving us such a talented, artistic and wonderful young man.

  7. I like your sentiment pairing ! Those two do look good together !
Great card with details ,but not fussy girlie looking . I also like the Crumb Cake addition !

  8. My goodness, Brian, you are SO clever!!! I really love this masculine retirement card!

  9. Wow, thats nailing it, pun intended.

  10. This is a perfect masculine card, Brian. Love it! And I also love the color combo. I have saved quite a few of them on my Pinterest board.

  11. Love the masculine twist on this layout inspiration that could be taken as feminine with the doily.

  12. Thanks for the great inspiration to use the top of the treat bag as an edge!! Great masculine card.

  13. This card is fontalicious! LOVE it!

  15. Masterful combination of stamp sets. And the mini treat bag “teeth” are the perfect addition! Great card Brian.
