Falling Flowers to Welcome Spring, Part 2

It’s rare that I will stretch my discussions about single project over two blog posts, but I have so much I want to share about this card an the process of making it and sharing it with my club members!  Here’s the card I shared with you yesterday:

Falling Flowers, May Flowers Framelits, Crazy About You, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, Spring card

If you missed yesterday’s post and want to get all caught up, you can CLICK HERE.  As promised, I wanted to share a couple more things about this project – including a tip for sharing this with others.

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Watercoloring to Go.  The flowers and leaves on this card are stamped with Archival Basic Black and colored with four inks and a Blender Pen – Watercolor Wonder, Daffodil Delight, Rich Razzleberry and Emerald Envy.  For coloring at home, I always open up a stamp pad, press the lid to gather ink on the inside of the lid and pull my ink from there.  When packing to take my supplies to Selina’s house for club, though, I thought of a way to make that easier.Use lids of embellishment containers for watercoloring in classes, Stampin' Up!, Brian King
    • I grabbed two small Stampin’ Up! embellishment containers (like the ones small trinkets come in)
    • For each color of ink I wanted to use, I punched a small circle (I used the eyes from the Owl Builder punch) and dropped it into the container.
    • When I arrived a club, I opened the lids, added drops of ink to each.
    • Participants just passed around the little lids and dipped their Blender Pens into the ink on the lid.
    • At the end of the night, I closed the lids and threw them away.
    • Bonus:  Less “stuff” to carry with me and less “stuff” to carry home after.  Also, less ink pads drying out on the table.  🙂
  • Tips for Watercoloring with a Blender Pen.  This stamp set features lots of small lines on the flowers and leaves – perfect for alternating the richness of colors for a lovely look.  It takes a little bit of practice (or playing around) to get the right amount of ink on your Blender Pen and to learn to paint with the Blender Pen – but that’s the fun part.  For each of these flowers, I alternated between light and dark sections. When I had finished one section with a darker application of ink, I would paint a lighter one and re-ink when necessary.  These colors really pop and are fun to paint.Falling Flowers, May Flowers Framelits, Crazy About You, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, Spring card
  • Inspiration from Shawn.  Yesterday I mentioned that I was inspired to make this card after oohing and aahing at a card by Shawn deOliveira.  While my card doesn’t look very much like his, the inspiration for the background is still there.  I scooted the base panel from his card up to make a bold stripe on mine.  I even stamped the background to add a light pattern to my card.  Other than those elements of the background panel, I made this card my own.  I had a lot of fun with it.
