A Witty Birthday Card for April Fool’s Day

For those of you who celebrate Easter, Happy Easter! I hope you are able to enjoy your day with the ones you love (if you choose to spend it with them). Don’t eat all the chocolate too early in the day – pace yourself. <3

It’s also April 1 – Happy April Fool’s Day! No practical jokes here today – just a card that’s a little on the silly side. Today I’m sharing a fun birthday card I made with the super-fun Birthday Wit stamp set from Stampin’ Up!’s 2018 Occasions Catalog. Paired with a page from the Tutti-Frutti 6″ x 6″ Designer Series Paper, I created a simple, but fun, card. Here it is:

  • Know Your Audience. Funny cards can be tricky. They aren’t perfect for just anyone, but we get to select products and design cards for people we know and love. When you design a card specifically for the recipient,  a funny card can be perfect. As with style and color selection, you have to know your audience. I wouldn’t dare give this card t someone who seriously struggles, for example, with a nut allergy – it’s almost mean. For someone who devours all of the foods list on this card, though, it’s quite a hoot. I know the person who’ll be receiving this card, and I know it will be well-received. Here’s a look at Birthday Wit:

    Birthday Wit, Stampin’ Up!

  • You’re Welcome. I had some fun with the “You’re Welcome” sentiment that comes with this set a couple of weeks ago. While I initially assumed it paired with the “Nothing says happy birthday like a piece of paper folded in half” sentiment, it works well with this one, too. Birthday Wit, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, funny birthday cardI stamped the long sentiment on a strip of Thick Whisper White, leaving room at the bottom for “you’re welcome.” I stamped that sentiment on a strip of Lemon Lime Twist and glued it to the Whisper White base. I can’t decide if that causes it to blend in or stand out, but I like it. 🙂
  • Simple Layers. You already know how much I love to play with borders and layers in my cards. The Tutti-Frutti 6″ x 6″ Designer Series Paper base panel is surrounded by a piece of Thick Basic Black that’s just 1/8″ wider and 1/8″ taller than the Designer Series Paper. That gives me a 1/16″ of cardstock around each edge. I can glue that down with ease, using my  Multipurpose Liquid Glue – the wet glue gives me a little wiggle room to move things around. The border around the focal banner is 1/8″ wider and 1/16″ taller than the banner so that it’s flush with the top of the Designer Series Paper.

I did not pay much attention to this stamp set but it is one I will have to have. This is a cut a card ,

  3. I vote Stand out, love that you added “You’re Wlecome” to the front.

  4. I love the colors, the layers and sentiment…well, everything about this card. I, too, had overlooked this stamp set, but it does have some really fun sentiments. There you go being an enabler again!! I have the paper pack and although I’m not much of a fruit person, I have used it more than I thought I would. Have a wonderful day however you spend it!

    • I have to admit that I’m in the same boat with this paper, HJ! I don’t love fruit and didn’t expect to use it much, but the colors and patterns are hard to stay away from. Love this pack! <3 Thanks!

  5. Brian, your cards are always perfect. Straight cuts and exact spacing. Other than using glue, to allow for wriggle room, any other advice. What kind of cutting tool do you use?

    • Thanks so much, Ann! I appreciate the kind compliment. I use Stampin’ Up!’ Stampin’ Trimmer for my cards – I think it gives the most accurate cuts for layering. I always line up pieces to make sure I’m happy with the overall look before gluing anything down. I hope that helps.

  6. Fabulously executed! Love the colour choices. I agree, you need to know your audience with this one!

  7. I have looked at this set, decided against it, looked at it again, decided against it and now……….well, dang – I want to get it.

Happy Easter to you and your entire family Brian.

  8. Oh my, I love the color you chose with the B&W. So simple, so elegant! My husband and I celebrate Easter by giving each other a box of candy! Have a happy day Brian!

  9. Brian, you’re the King, should you really be playing Court Jester? Either way you earned a chuckle from me. I love this sentiment and plan to CASE this card for my cousin’s birthday. She on an everything free (except groceries from Whole Foods) diet.

  10. Great card, Brian! I love the addition of “You’re welcome.” I initially thought that stamp went with the “They say if someone forgets your birthday …” but now I see it can “finish” any of those sentiments. ?

    • Funny! I thought the “you’re welcome” paired with the “nothing says happy birthday like a piece of paper folded in half” statement. I guess it’s more versatile than we though. 🙂
