Time to Celebrate with Stampin’ Up!’s Piece of Cake Bundle

I wanted to make a quick, easy birthday card with the Piece of Cake Bundle. While the card is still pretty easy and kept a clean appeal, it wasn’t quite as quick as I had planned. My card pulls together three new products from Stampin’ Up!’s 2019 Occasions Catalog – the Piece of Cake Bundle, the Itty Bitty Birthdays stamp set and the Rectangles Stitched Framelits Dies. What fun! Here’s my card:

  • Fun Layout. I’ve seen 1,001 cards lately where the creator randomly stamps a sentiment in a background collage – over and over in different intensities of ink. I don’t know where this style originated, but I love it. I stamped “TIME TO CELEBRATE!” over and over in the lower, right corner of the white panel on this card. There are three intensities of Smoky Slate (fully inked, stamped off once and stamped off twice) that make this collage of gray sentiments. The collage would be rather drab (except for the celebrating part) without the gorgeous cake over it. I stamped the cake and pedestal with Basic Black ink and colored the flowers, leaves and decorative accents with a mix of Stampin’ Write Markers and a Blender Pen to give different shades of the same colors. Here’s a closer look:Piece of Cake Bundle, Itty Bitty Birthdays, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, birthday cardWith a scrap of vellum leftover from Thursday’s project, I cropped a 2-1/4″ circle of Vellum Cardstock to frame my cake and give a hazy peekaboo at the collage of words behind it.
  • Three New Products. My card features three new products you need from the upcoming 2019 Occasions Catalog – the gorgeous cake and stand are from the Piece of Cake Bundle. I love punches and use them as often as I can. The Piece of Cake Bundle was a no-brainer for me when I was placing my Demonstrator pre-order. Here’s a look at the elements of the Piece of Cake Bundle:Piece of Cake Bundle, Stampin' Up! 150579Yesterday I shared a project off the front cover of the 2019 Occasions Catalog that showcases a great sentiment from the Itty Bitty Birthdays stamp set. The fun celebratory sentiment on today’s card comes from this stamp set, too:Itty Bitty Birthdays, Stampin' Up! 148618The stitched Grapefruit Grove rectangle that creates a frame around my focal image is the largest of the rectangle layers in the Rectangle Stitched Framelits Dies. • Sweet Color Combination. Now that I’ve started making Spring-themed cards, I’ve started moving toward soft, sweet color combinations. Who wants to celebrate their birthday with a Cajun Craze and Garden Green cake? Now that I say it, I realize it’s still cake (and I wouldn’t turn it down), but Grapefruit Grove flowers are super-sweet. If you like this combination of Pear Pizzazz, Grapefruit Grove and Smoky Slate, please save this:Stampin' Up! Color Inspiration - Pear Pizzazz, Grapefruit Grove, Smoky SlateI shared this picture above, but I think it’s worth looking at it again to appreciate how this combination of colors works together:Piece of Cake Bundle, Itty Bitty Birthdays, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, birthday card

  1. Super cute card and design idea. I really like it!

  2. I love how you added the green matte to tie everything together. Great color combo and great card!!!

  3. Beautiful card. The stitched edge and touch of vellum take it to a big WOW!

  4. I like the colors ! Great card and that stamp set is wanting to come to my house !!
Oh and what an early subtle birthday hint !!! GIGGLE !

  5. Love this great color combo, Brian. Great job with the sentiment stamping and coloring. Framelits always make layering easier. Have a very nice day.

  6. I always love your mating but that stitched rect makes it perfect and great coloring on the cake! Wonderful card! Happy day before your birthday!!!

  7. Got to be honest, I thought “ho hum” and not sure I really liked it. BUT, it bothered me as I came back to this card several times as I was sort of intrigued. So, started to break it down. Colors, not my choice but hey I could work with these with stepping out of my comfort zone. Layers, love them and you had me with the stitched layers. I am warming up to using vellum. I focused in on the words, now that is cool and I began thinking of how you did it. It must be the cake though your coloring was spot on it reminded me more of a wedding cake. Now, I want these sets to try it with a different cake. Now wasn’t that silly? I think I have way too much time on my hands or just total burn out which is most likely. I wonder how the galvanized sheet would look as the cake holder. Man, sneaky way of enabling me to get these sets!

    • My entire goal today was to trick you into these sets, Chris. 🙂 I’m so happy you spent so much time with it to decide what (if anything) you like about it. Thanks so much for breaking it down. I was going to work with a different cake design, at first, but switched without thinking of how the formal cake might clash with the modern sentiment. You’ll have fun with these. <3

  8. I really like this card. It surprises me that I like it so much, but I have to say the placement of the flowers and the vellum circle really softens the graphic look of this card. Beautifully put together.

    • Thanks so much, Rachael! I’m so glad you like it. I changed to the formal, floral cake part-way through my design and didn’t think about how it might clash with the graphic pattern below. Glad to know it still worked. <3

  9. Hmm – could it be the lead up to a very special persons birthday? I wonder if that person is going to have a birthday cake as beautiful as the one you created for this card? Who could that be?????????

    • I have no idea who you are talking about, Grace, but I bet he’s a super-kind person who appreciates all the great birthday cards he’s been receiving. <3

  10. Great card today, Brian! Love your color choices, and am very interested in this bundle. Am I correct in thinking that it becomes available in January for non-demonstrators?

  11. I love this….so elegant…great colors and I love the vellum circle!
