Design Notes – a Bird Ballad Redo

Last week I shared a project for the FabFriday sketch challenge that features a panel of Bird Ballad Designer Series Paper that I love. The card featured SIX new products from Stampin’ Up!’s 2019 Annual Catalog. Do you remember that post? If not, you can see it here.

What you don’t know, though, is that the card I shared is VERSION 2 of the card. Even while packing to go out of town, I couldn’t go live with the card I made – some things were off about it, and I needed to remake the entire card to get what I wanted. The first version was lovely, but it wasn’t EVERYTHING I wanted it to be, so a redo was in order.

Here’s a look at the final version of the card that I shared with you last week:

I like when I can walk you through my changes as I think they help to share my process for card designs. Before I share the list of differences, here’s a look at these two cards side-by-side:

Tasteful Textures, Bird Ballad Designer Series Paper, Stampin' Up!, Brian KingIt wasn’t until I sat down to list out the changes I made that I realized they ALL had to do with the dies I used. Here are the changes I made between the two cards:

  1. Panel Size. I reduced the height of the focal panel by just a snidge so that it would work with the scalloped/stitched die from the Arts & Crafts Dies. I wasn’t happy with the tiny gap at the top of the original card that was left when the die didn’t fit perfectly. Small changes can make a big difference. It Starts with Art Bundle, Stampin' Up!, 151090
  2. Tree Color. I loved the sweet tree from Sweet Silhouettes Dies and was so excited to crop it out in Soft Suede, tying it into the colors from the paper and the borders I used on my card. Once it was all glued down, though, it was too dark for what I wanted. It seemed to muddy up my card and cover up the soft beauty of the Bird Ballad Designer Series Paper. I wanted a softness I wasn’t getting with Soft Suede. That’s when I reached for the Petal Pink Perennial Essence 12″ x 12″ Vellum Cardstock.Silhouette Scenes Bundle, Stampin' Up! 151058
  3. Sentiment Shape. I love a good oval for sentiments, but I felt that the oval was hiding too much of the tree behind it. At the last minute of building my second card, I decided to crop the sentiment with another stitched die – the Stitched Nested Labels Die. I was happy with how perfectly this shape worked with my design.Free as a Bird Bundle, Stampin' Up! 151123
