SIGH…Back on Your Feet

If you were in Atlanta for my Brian’s Fall Stamp Along event or Stampin’ Up!’s OnStage, then you know much of my weekend was spent with a friend, Dawn Olchefske, who fell getting onto the plane in Minneapolis and tore her ACL and fractured her knee. Those are serious injuries, and she handled the weekend like a pro. When I sat down on Sunday afternoon to make a card for this week’s Global Design Project challenge, I knew I’d be making a Get Well card for Dawn. Lucky for me, Sarah Berry gave me great inspiration for this CASE the Designer Challenge. Here’s my card:

Back on Your Feet, Garden Lane, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, Get Well Soon cardAnd here’s the banner for the challenge that inspired my card:

GDP216When we CASE (Copy and Share Everything or Copy and Selectively Edit), we find inspiration in a project – theme, color combinations, layout, products used – and create our own project by making changes to make it our own. I love the rounded corners on Sarah’s card and the layout of her design. Sarah designed her card with the Mosaic Mood Specialty Designer Series Paper (such a gorgeous pack and a gorgeous card).

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Trio of Products. When I bought the Back on Your Feet stamp set, I knew I’d be using the turtle and giraffe, but I wasn’t sure I’d ever have a reason to use the sloth. That all changed this weekend when Dawn wound up in a leg brace. “Sigh…” just says it all – what a bummer to be hospitalized while out of town and traveling alone. We all felt so bad for her and tried our best to accommodate her needs during the weekend. Here’s a look at the images and sentiments in Back on Your Feet:Back on Your Feet, Stampin' Up! 149385I paired the sloth with a beautiful green paper from Garden Lane – enough of a pattern to build some texture but not bold enough to take away from the sloth. Here’s a look at the colors and patterns in the Garden Lane Designer Series Paper:Garden Lane Designer Series Paper, Stampin' Up! 2019 Annual Catalog, 149488The corners of the card base and panels were punched with the corner rounder element on the Detailed Trio Punch. Here’s a look at the three options you can choose with this versatile punch: Detailed Trio Punch, Stampin' Up! 146320
  • Coloring the Sloth. I stamped the sloth with Memento Tuxedo Black ink on Thick Whisper White and colored him with Crumb Cake Stampin’ Blends. I colored the tree branch with a Bronze Stampin’ Blend and the leaves with Mint Macaron. Such fun!Back on Your Feet, Garden Lane, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, Get Well Soon cardDuring my Fall Stamp-Along, my friend Wendy Cranford shared some amazing tips for using Blends. A part of her presentation centered around “coloring white.” She shared ways to add subtle shading around edges of a white object, and I put those to practice here. I colored the shaded parts of the cast with Light Smoky Slate Stampin’ Blend and then blended it a bit with the Color Lifter. Love that look!
  • Warm Color Trio. I thought the panel of Garden Lane featured a base of Mint Macaron and line art in Soft Suede, but the line art is actually with Mossy Meadow. I still loved the warmth of Soft Suede, so I added a small strip on my card. The warm colors of this card are very soothing, but I particularly love the mix of Mint Macaron, Crumb Cake and Mossy Meadow. If you love this combination as much as I do, please save this:Stampin' Up! Color Inspiration - MInt Macaron, Crumb Cake, Mossy Meadow

In case you were wondering, Dawn made it home Sunday after a long weekend of many events. She was honored a lot at OnStage and even shared projects she made with a stamp set she inspired as a million dollar achiever. Too bad she won’t remember much of it. 🙂 Here’s Dawn be recognized for something incredible – you can also see me in the picture even though I wasn’t being recognized for the same:

    • Thanks, Jackie! I’m so grateful you were able to help her get back to the airport – y’all are awesome! I am happy, too, that I was able to see so much of you this weekend. What fun! ♥

  2. Wow, that is amazing that Dawn could still make it to the event (with your help). This is the sweetest card, the rounded corners on the bottom of the card add such a beautiful touch.

  3. That little sloth couldn’t be cuter. What a perfect “get well” for Dawn!

  5. Just signed up to your site and glad I did. Several MN friends attended. Been stamping for about 20 yrs-give or take and find it way too much fun. Have almost 100 Christmas cards ready to go- not many duplicates -and we did a bunch for our service men/women overseas. I hostess that one. Look foreward to your next “issue”

    • Thanks so much for your message, Lois! Sounds like you’ve been busy and for a great cause. I look forward to sharing more projects and inspiration with you. ♥

  7. I’m so sorry to hear about Dawn’s fall, but what a trouper to make it through OnStage and home safely. How wonderful of you to help her. Your card is adorable and she will be thrilled to receive it. I hope you have the day off from work today and enjoy some relaxing downtime.

    • Thanks so much, Hilda! I took off two days last week for my event, so I’m back at work today. I’m going to white-knuckle it through the day, but relaxing downtime is on its way. 🙂 Hope your day is wonderful!

  8. So sorry you had a real need for this card, not just a hypothetical design challenge object. If a horrible thing like this had to happen to someone like Dawn, how lucky it was she had you and your retinue for help and support. The card certainly is the perfect representation of that caring. Love that sloth against the Garden Lane DSP, and the color combo. Perfect!

    • Thanks so much, Linda! I know it wasn’t an easy weekend for Dawn – and so many people were chipping in to help care for her. I, too, love that we have products at hand that allow us to make the exact card we want to make. ♥

  11. It’s hard to imagine continuing on with the weekend with the kind of injuries Dawn had. How awful! What a trooper she is and SU should do something amazing for Dawn to reward her for her dedication to SU even when injured. How wonderful a person you are Brian to have taken such great care of her even though you had to be totally exhausted. As I’ve said so many times, you are one special Dude. Thank you for you kindness in taking care of Dawn and wishes for a quick and complete recovery are on their way to her from Maine.

    • Thanks for your kind comments, Grace! I was happy to help take care of her while she was alone in a strange place. It was a wonderful weekend, Grace. Thank you for sending your well wishes. ♥
