It’s Memorial Day weekend in the United States. While the holiday marks the official kickoff of Summer (many are headed to the beach, hanging out by pools or enjoying cookouts with friends), Memorial Day is a day to remember those who’ve died in military service to our country. There’s nothing more patriotic than the beautiful combination of red, white and blue – and this combination of Pool Party, Real Red and Night of Navy has been a favorite of mine for years. Today’s card is a thank you card that combines these colors with a fun pattern and meaningful sentiment. Here’s my card:
The three-part sentiment on my card fits perfectly as a tribute for Memorial Day, don’t you think? I pulled the three words from a larger sentiment in the Inspired Thoughts stamp set and used tape to isolate the words I wanted to showcase here. “Remembered, appreciated and celebrated” – I couldn’t have said it better. Here’s a look at the Inspired Thoughts stamp set:
I created a fun pattern with the striped pattern in the Pool Party, Real Red and Night of Navy 6″ x 6″ Designer Series Paper (Subtles, Regals and Neutrals packs). I lined up the smallest 1″ square stitched square from the Stylish Shapes Dies along the stripes (two corners lined up against a stripe) to cut out four of each color. I then lined them up with alternating angles to create a chevron pattern from left-to right or top-to-bottom. Here’s how I lined up each square on the striped paper:
When each square is lined up with alternating angles, this pattern is built:
I added a small Opal Round to the right of each sentiment as an additional accent. I’m a big fan of the red, white and blue. Here are some of my favorite color combinations that are perfect for Memorial Day, including the combination I used on this card:
Stamp Sets: Inspired Thoughts Papers: Subtles 6″ x 6″ Designer Series Paper (Pool Party), Regals 6″ x 6″ Designer Series Paper (Real Red), Neutrals 6″ x 6″ Designer Series Paper (Night of Navy), Real Red, Night of Navy, Thick Basic White Inks: Night of Navy Accessories: Stylish Shapes Dies, Opal Rounds, Mini Stampin’ Dimensionals, Stampin’ Dimensionals
No matter what you are doing this Memorial Day weekend, I hope you are able to spend a little time with friends and family or relax at home – I hope you are able to enjoy this weekend in whatever way you want.
Thanks for stopping by today!

Both a beautiful tribute and card.
Very cool! You should have been an architect…..no clue how you managed to build that fabulous background!
What an awesome patterened background! Really great card! Happy Memorial Day! 🙂
Your cards are always so inspirational, but this one takes the cake! I love the combination of colors and simple patterns!!!!
This is perfection! Love how you crafted the die cutting and selected the perfect words. Amazing!!!
Loving that creative chevron layer. You are so awesome about gleaning special parts of a sentiment to use them in a way I would never think of. Enjoy your day!
I love everything about this card, Brian…. both the meaning and the design! You always have great ideas!
What a GREAT card my friend. TFS!
This stamp set was not anything I really wanted previously. But now, I think I need this sentiment. I want to make a bunch of military type cards. First a bunch of little 3×3 cards (easier to pack around) to give active personnel and veterans. It has become so automatic for people to say “thank you for your service” and not really even realize they are saying it. Plus, for honor flights, members of AMVETs, legions etc. I have the papers and cardstock, so it is time to use it! I will be ahead come Veteran’s Day as well.
You must have the mind of an engineer! What a FAB way to line up those squares to make such a classic pattern. GREAT card…and a beautiful tribute to those we honor for their sacrifice. HUGS my friend. XO
