Settin’ Sail with a Freshly Made Sketch

I’ve been participating in a lot of sketch and color challenges lately. I have a lot of ideas running through my head all the time, and these challenges help me to sort through my ideas and focus on the ones that are most appropriate for each challenge. Today, I’m happy to share my project based on a sketch from Jen Mitchell at Freshly Made Sketches. Like Jen, I really like a square card, so I used this sketch as an opportunity to use my photopolymer set, Settin’ Sail and to make this blue and gray square card:Settin' Sail Photopolymer Set, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, FMS98

And here’s the challenge badge from Freshly Made Sketches:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Color Combination. After I decided to ink up my Settin’ Sail stamp set, I searched for a Designer Series Paper to coordinate with a sailing theme. I flipped through my Designer Series Paper Swatch Books and found that this Pool Party pattern from I Am Me completely fit the bill. Awesome find, Brian! So, we started with Pool Party and Whisper White. I quickly decided to accent the Pool Party with Island Indigo and Smoky Slate. Together, these colors are very nautical.
  • Photopolymers. Have you tried them yet? I was a bit skeptical at first, but I really like the way these guys stamp. I do not mind a Stamp-a-ma-jig, but these stamps were a piece of cake to line up. After I stamped the banner with Smoky Slate, it was a breeze (a cool and refreshing breeze coming off the ocean late at night in the beginning of Fall) to stamp the sentiment right inside. The stamps are clear, so you can see exactly where you are stamping. To review the photopolymer sets currently available, please click here.
  • Shapes in a Sketch Challenge. The base of the square on this sketch shows two circles. As a general rule, it’s OK to switch out the shape with something else that works – the sketch is a guideline, not a rule. I decided to add two little flags from the stamp set – I staggered them slightly to more closely resemble Jen’s sketch.

Stamp Sets: Settin’ Sail Photopolymer Set Inks: Island Indigo, Smoky Slate Papers: Island Indigo, Smoky Slate, Whisper White, I Am Me Designer Series Paper Accessories: 1-3/8″ Circle punch, 1-1/4″ Circle punch, Candy Dots (Regals), Stampin’ Dimensionals

  1. Brian I really like your clean crisp designs. I look forward to seeing what you have new each day. Thank you for sharing. Kitty

Yes Brian, clean, crisp, fresh, and breezy!!! 🙂 I love the colors you chose & would sail away with you any time!!! 😉

  3. Good Mornin’ Brian! I like the square card. I like the colors. I like the two-layer strip instead of a ribbon. I’ve been practicing my layering. Thanks a bunch. 🙂

  4. Hi Brian! I haven’t been leaving many comments … How many times can you say you are amazing? LOL Love the square card and the tags are the perfect touch!!!

  5. I love this sketch and what you did with it Brian, I also like square cards best. This card looks classy and fresh and you gave it just the right amount of bling with those delicious Candy Dots. Thank you for sharing.

  6. I feel as though I’m on the seacoast of New England with this card Brian, Maine perhaps. Question for you though, I have noticed that you do like the square cards, can you tell us what size the are, and I know su must carry an envelope to accommodate them, right?
    Anyway, LOVE this card 🙂

    • Thanks, Karen. This card is 5-1/2″ x 5-1/2″. The only square envelopes Stampin’ Up! carries are the ones that accomodate a 3″ x 3″ card. I make my envelopes with my Simply Scored tool. Stampin’ Up! announced that they will be releasing and tool for making envelopes (saw it at Convention), and I couldn’t be happier.

  7. Ahoy Matey ! What nice colors and as usual your card looks so neat. I don`t mean groovy neat …..I mean neat as in every thing is lined up to perfection . And at the risk of sounding like an ad person for SU …Karen , if you get the new Envelope Punch Board that SU is coming out with you can make your envie to go with your card !! Brian, you have my address to send me a little something for that plug !! (Giggle )

  8. Brian, Love this card! It’s crisp and clean – I don’t care too much for ‘fussy’ over-done cards. This reminds me of my recent trip to Harbor Springs, MI during regatta weekend. The colors are beautiful as is your use of color dots. Thanks for showing us how easy (for you) it is to create a card using those Sketches!

  9. Karen was correct…here I am in Maine feeling one with your card. : ) The colors, designer paper selection and stamp choice are all stunning. You are very talented Brian!

  10. I just knew you would love the photopolymers Brian! I can’t wait for SU to start offering their entire collection in photopolymer! I love my Stamp-a-ma-jig but I would also like to retire it. The other really fantastic thing about photopolymer stamps is that they are so super duper easy to clean! Either a quick swipe with a sponge or, if you are in a HUGE hurry, a swipe across the old pair of jeans you have on. Great card Brian – I love the color combo.

  11. This cute set will be arriving at my house this week. Can’t wait. Just love it and your card. Great job Brian.

  12. GREAT card Brian!!!!!! You reminded me about the photopolymer stamps! loved the falgs and the twist on the sailboat!

  13. Loving your color choices! You do not have to be a square to create a wonderful square card! I have yet to purchase a polymer set yet, but have to say that this is the set I would consider as my first….great job!

  14. I absolutely love this card! The little flags are great and the boat tilted a little is clever! 🙂
