Best Wishes, a PPA Sketch

Is it really Thursday already?!?  Where has the week gone?  It’ll be November before we know it.  I’m happy that it’s Thursday because that means I get to share my card for The Pals Paper Arts Sketch Challenge (PPA177) this week.  Nicole Watt created a great sketch for us to work with.  Here’s my card:Express Yourself (hostess), Stampin' Up!, Brian King, PPA177

And here’s the PPA sketch:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders:

  • Selecting Colors.  Do you want to hear a story about how I selected these colors for my card front?  If you do, then you’re in the right place.  If you don’t, then you can just skip ahead to the next bullet point – I mean, you are welcome to keep reading (I still like you), but I don’t want to keep talking to you when others are sitting at the edges of their seats to hear my color story.  They are REALLY interested in why I picked these colors, so I need to get back to them.  Bye!  OK, so it’s just you and me again…where was I?  Oh!  I knew I wanted to make a wedding card, and I knew I was working with Summer Starfruit, so I pulled out my trusty Color Coach to see what would work well with Summer Starfruit.  On the Summer Starfruit card, my Color Coach suggests a pairing with Elegant Eggplant and Smoky Slate.  Hmmm.  I like that, but it’s too much dark for my wedding card.  I flipped a couple of cards back to the Primrose Petals card, which suggests a pairing of Primrose Petals with Summer Starfruit and Basic Gray.  There you have it.  Simple as can be.  Wasn’t that a great story? I’m glad you stuck around to read it.
  • Repurposing Designer Series Paper.  Since the moment the first pack of Witches’ Brew Designer Series Paper arrived at my doorstep, I have been in love with the design on this page.  It’s so elegant and yet so creepy with a ton of tiny little spiders.  I decided to cover the spiders with tiny pearls.  I know I’m still left with beautiful spider webs, but the recipient of this card doesn’t have to know that.  While the pearls are added to cover the spiders, they add a nice tufted look to the face of the card, similar to a Christmas card I posted on Monday.Witches' Brew, Stampin' Up!, Brian King
  • Texture and Dimension.  There’s not a lot of stamping on this card, but there sure are a lot of accessories to make the card pop.  For starters, there are a bunch of pearls to add a nice texture to the DSP.  The ribbon adds a softness to the card, and a really great texture.  The bright color of the ribbon draws your eye up from the saturated Summer Starfruit.  Stampin’ Dimensionals pop this sentiment for an additional layer to the card front.

Stamp sets:  Express Yourself (hostess)  Inks:  Basic Gray  Papers:  Basic Gray, Primrose Petals, Summer Starfruit, Very Vanilla, Witches’ Brew Designer Series Paper  Accessories: Pearl Basic Jewels, 3/8″ Stitched Satin Ribbon, Stampin’ Dimensionals

  1. Love this card Brian!! Are you channeling Ann with all your pearls? She would be very proud.

  2. Brian, I love this card! The tufted look of the dsp is so elegant. I am not a fan of summer starfruit however, with this pairing is is very pretty. Love how you made the dsp work for you.
Great job with the sketch also!
    Donna

  3. It’s lovely, Brian! The pearls definitely hide the little spiders and the bow is perfectly tied. Kinda non-traditional wedding colors which I like a lot about your card!

  5. I think the pearls make the webs look more like lace Brian. Great idea.

  6. Stunningly perfectly beautiful!

  7. Love your tufted look on both this and the Christmas card. I have this paper but was going to put it away as I am done with Halloween cards. Now I can pull it back out and use it. Thanks for the idea. You always come up with great ideas.

  8. Wow! The pearls immediately caught my attention; so elegant! Lets hope that none of them fall off! Wouldn’t that be an interesting sight for the bride and groom to see? Eeeeek! LOL P.S. Loved your Christmas card too; I may have to repurpose that 🙂

  9. This is such a “WOW!” card, Brian! You have turned a “spooky” paper into such an elegant design. The pearl accents are awesome. The color combo is gorgeous, too.

  12. Well, if you hadn’t mentioned the teeny, tiny spiders, I wouldn’t have guessed this was actually Halloween paper, those spider webs look like lace!! Your idea of covering this little critters with those pearls is clever and inspired, that’s what threw me off. Your card is elegant and beautiful Brian and the story of how you arrived at this color combination just reaffirms the fact that you have an amazing eye for color and design and, thankfully you like to share this gift with people like me, who are very, very challenged in this arena. THANK YOU!

  13. I love looking at the Pals cards without looking at the names of the designers and guessing who made them….so my first thought when I saw all those beautiful pearls was… Ann, of course. Wow, was I wrong this time! Beautiful card, Brian and I never would have guessed spiders were hiding behind all those pearls.

  14. Funny, you know I thought that this DSP was so pretty and could be used for things other than Halloween also, except for the tiny spiders. You covered them brilliantly!

  15. This is the King version of rock, paper, scissors……pearl, scissors, spider. Pearls always win! And yes, let’s hope that nary a one falls off!

  16. You are amazing what a great idea to cover the spiders!! Loved the rambling about the colors 🙂 reminds me of our chat at the airport after convention. Lol!

  17. You have inspired me Brian to get that sheet of dsp out and use it! Great card!

  18. Laurie Burns Gachewicz

I agree with all the comments here Brian, but especially Lynn, Cindy and Maria… this card is so elegant and the pearls just enhance the lacey look of this DSP!!!!! I just love knowing that there are teeny tiny spiders hiding under all of those shiny pearls & the wedding couple is none the wiser!!!! Hee hee!!! 🙂 And of course I enjoyed your story about your color journey & ultimate selection; I am gleefully one of those edge-of-your-seaters!!!! TFS Brian, this card is absolutely STUNNING!!!!

  19. Great cover-up! Looks awesome and what a great way to use Halloween paper for something else than Halloween cards. Always enjoy your stories and great tips.

  26. Beautiful, Brian! I love the pearls!

  27. Your card is beautiful. I didn’t even connect the paper with Witches Brew until I read your post. What a great idea to dress the paper up with the pearls over the spiders. You taught me not to prejudge a DSP, too (I’m not big on Halloween….).
