I’ve been sharing a lot of Valentine’s Day cards lately. We’re getting close! Today’s card features a sentiment from Groovy Love (a love-themed stamp set in Stampin’ Up!’s Annual Catalog), but I thought the sentiment would be perfect, too, for a baby card. I also pulled in the [unexpected] It’s My Party Designer Series Paper Stack to create a sweet and simple backdrop for the card. How sweet and simple is this card?
Tips, Tricks and Reminders
- Lots of Love. The two stamp sets featured on this clean and simple card are Groovy Love and Made with Love. Both sets have very specific occasions in mind, but they work perfectly together. The white onesie – who doesn’t “awwww” at a simple, white onesie? – is stamped on Thick Whisper White with Basic Black Archival ink and cropped with the Baby’s First Framelits. The sentiment from Groovy Love is stamped on Blushing Bride with Basic Black Archival ink and punched with the Large Oval punch.
- Balancing Shapes. I talk a lot about the importance of balance on a card. “Balance” doesn’t always mean “centered.” I tilted this onesie at a bit of an angle – babies are cute when they are nestled in your arms (or in someone else’s arms if they are crying). I thought this angle gave that sweet appeal. The Blushing Bride oval is positioned over the onesie and off to the side to balance the white space of the onesie and the shape of the oval. A little squint confirms that the position of the two is weighted the same on the card – and ensures me a nickel or two. You can see my Squinting Technique video here.
- Sweet Colors. I made this card to celebrate the birth of a baby girl – it goes without saying that I used pink, right? That said, the most prominent colors on the card are Sahara Sand and Whisper White. The touch of pink in the middle, the thin border around the top layer and the pink base give this card just enough to say “baby girl” without being “over-the-top girly.” If you like these colors, feel free to save this:

I hope you like today’s project. I think it’s a perfect example of how a card doesn’t have to be complicated to be beautifully layered and sweet.

Awwww so sweet! This is an adorable card. Love your layers.
Adorable card Brian, love your combination of colors for a girl card, this set has the most adorable baby images.
Thank you for sharing.
Adorable! What else is there to say!?
I come to your blog daily because I love your cards and I love how you layer. You have layering down to a science! Your patterned layer piece brings the focus to the onesie perfectly yet your other layers show more color, it’s perfection. You call it a simple card but it’s got science behind it! 🙂 Love it.
I really love the onesie but it’s the layering that makes this card. Having the onesie slightly tilted really brings this simple card to a higher level. Honestly, a Brian King card seems to be magnificent even when he considers it “simple”.
Tell me . . . did you go to “genius camp” at some point in your life? This is simply “genius” using the “born to be loved” stamp with the onesie.
Very sweet! I owe you a nickel.
Super sweet card Brian! I love your comment about crying babies are better in someone else’s arms – LOL!
Perfect sentiment for this card, never would have thought of it! That’s why you’re the KING!
