SNEAK PEEK: Quilt Builder Framelits for GDP101

What an amazing week of projects at the Global Design Project last week!  Y’all really showed up with some beautiful work.  Thank you to all of those who participated – and a special thank you to all of those who CASEd my project.  I loved every one of them!

This week’s GDP color challenge features three gorgeous colors – Night of Navy, Bermuda Bay and Flirty Flamingo.  I needed a “thinking of you” card for a friend who’s going through a rough patch.  Nothing says “I’m here for you” like a warm blanket and a beautiful card.  Here’s my card:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Christmas Quilt Bundle.  If the Christmas Quilt Bundle (which includes the Quilt Builder Framelits) isn’t on the top of your wish list from the 2017 Holiday Catalog, then you don’t yet have a wish list.  I’ve used this set twice (click here to see my first project with this bundle).  Funny that neither of my projects has a “Christmas feel.”  Here’s a look at this new bundle (if you click on the picture below, you can see other samples and a video with this new bundle):

  • Intricate Details.  I love the patterns and details in these Quilt Builder Dies.  I used three of the dies in this versatile collection to build my quilt pattern.  First I used the star-shaped image in the lower left of the picture above with Bermuda Bay and Flirty Flamingo cardstock.  This die doesn’t cut anything – it adds stitched lines to the pattern I then cut with the Framelits dies in the bottom, right corner of the picture above.  To create the Night of Navy frame in which these pieces are glued, I cropped the die in the lower, right corner AND included the slightly larger square at the same time.  This gave me the perfect fame I wanted.  I glued all of these pieces on a Whisper White square and layered from there.

While we are talking about details, the little heart came from the Cookie Cutter Builder Punch – what an adorable little heart!

  • Crumb Cake, Anyone?  I love these colors – the sweet pink, the bright blue and the dark blue are perfect together.  I needed one more color, though, to complete the balance of this card.  One of my go-to colors in this situation is Crumb Cake, a neutral that works with everything.  I didn’t add too much Crumb Cake – just enough to tone down the colors a bit.  Also, I like cake.

  1. This is beautiful ! And to me, quilts are like a big hug! So perfect for your intent. ❤

    • Thanks, Jackie! I almost wrote those exact words in my post – “quilts are like big hugs” – but left it alone. LOVE that you said that. Thanks for your kind comment!

  2. Love this!!! As if the color combo wasn’t enough, you have reconfirmed my thoughts on this set…it’s beyond Christmas. It doesn’t hurt that there are some great basic shapes in the framelets too.

    • Thanks, Maleta! I’m so glad you like my card. I first thought this was a “grandma” set, but I’m happy with the bold patterns that can be used for all occasions. Such a great set. Thanks!

  3. I saw this bundle and went “Nope, not for me”. Well you’ve changed my mind because I love this card. I know that the challenge sort of makes some of the color choices for you, but your layout and other choices make this card sing. Awesome job Brian.

    • Awwww…thanks, Robbye! I’m not a quilter, but I love this bundle. I’m so glad you’ve “seen the light” on it – I think it’s going to be super-popular when the catalog is released September 1. <3

  4. The Night of Navy background is genius. Others might have used Basic Black but I think it would have been too harsh. Nice! This is a set that better carry over to next year’s catalog. Love it.

    • Thanks, Dianne. I always like to include some black on my cards, but this Night of Navy was a perfect touch – I’m glad it was part of the color challenge. Glad you like this card – I, too, hope this set carries over. <3

  5. Wow! This card makes me want to quilt. Well, at least try… Really beautiful. I’m off yo add this to tge list of Brian cards to CASE ?

  6. I love the navy and bermuda bay today! The entire mix is pretty and artful!

  7. Beautiful use of the colors this week! The quilt square is so pretty!

  8. Brian, I absolutely LOVE your finished photos where you label the elements you have used…saw them on Pinterest and decided to follow your blog. I think every post/pin should be required to do the same thing. It makes it easy for me to know if I own everything needed to case the project! Thank you!

    • Hi Linda, Thank you so much for your comment. I’m so glad these picture tutorials are helpful. I try my best to include them when I used lots of images or sentiments from a variety of sets. Thanks!

  9. OMG Brian, where do I start…excellent colors and I think this set was made for you, why; because it screams layers. And I long ago crowned you as the King of layering. Quilts mean covered in love, the recipient of this beautiful card will feel the warmth and caring poppping out.

    • Katrina, Thank you so much for being such a loyal commenter. I appreciate your feedback. I’m thrilled to be crowned King of Layering – I find it hard to create with just a layer or two. I’m so glad you like this card.

  10. Hi Brian – I was in my 20’s when I started quilting and since then the quilting bug has bitten lots and lots of young ladies and revived the art. I’m so thrilled to see all the young women at fabric stores, quilt shows and as members of guilds. I am definitely ordering this bundle on my first order from the holiday catalog. Often it’s the little touches that make a quilt stand out and the pearl in the center of the star and the little pink heart add so much to this beautiful card. I think the friend you are sending it to will be thrilled and uplifted when he/she receives it. I felt uplifted just looking at it this afternoon. You are a special and thoughtful person Brian.

    • Grace – you were the first person I thought of when I first saw this set – you would probably know best how to assemble all of these quilt pieces. I can’t wait to see what you make with it!

  11. I would NEVER use this for Christmase in Christmas “colors”, but I would use it frequently throughout the year in all other colors. I LOVE how you inspired me with your layout and colors, and now I can hardly wait to receive a catalogue.

    • Some of these patterns work well with Christmas themes, but I agree! I see these dies as all-year-long dies, so I like to pick my own colors. 🙂 It’s a great bundle! Thanks for your comment.

  12. Fantastic card Brian! Your card has such a modern flair that really shows thw versatility of this set! It went from a most probably to the top of the list!

    • Yay! I love to hear that, Andrea! While quilts wouldn’t normally fit into my CAS style, I have really had a lot of fun with these. Lots of fun patterns in this set – I know you’ll have fun with it! 🙂

  13. That was the first set on my wish list! I love the versatility of it! And I agree with you, a quilt is like a big hug. Nice and warm and comforting.
