Make a Wish with Broadway Birthday (part 2)

On Tuesday, I shared a card I made for Louise Sharp’s stamping event in Australia (and shared with my local stamp club). If you missed that post, you can click here to see more about this project. Today I’m sharing a few more tips and tricks for for this project.

Let’s start with a quick refresher of the card we’re talking about – it’s a project with little stamping and simple layering, and it’s as appropriate for a woman as it is for a man. Here’s a look at the card:

Broadway Birthday Bundle, Bokeh Dots, Stampin' Up!, Brian KingOn Tuesday, I shared some tips creating this card (like the Wink of Stella star and the color combination). Today, I want to talk a little bit more about the stamped background, the placement of the cutout words and the masked sentiment on the card. Yay!

Bokeh Dots

The background on this card is stamped with the starry image from the Bokeh Dots stamp set. Here’s a look at this stamp set:Bokeh Dots, Stampin' Up! 148113These two images – one is bokeh spots, and one is a starry sky – are gorgeous. Bokeh Dots is one of five Distinktive Stamps in Stampin’ Up!’s 2018 Annual Catalog – and there’s another Distinktive set in Stampin’ Up!’s 2018 Holiday Catalog. As you can see when you click on the promotional flyer below, Distinktive Stamps create different opacities in a single, stamped image for realistic depth and intensity: There’s a trick to getting the most out of these stamped images – if you apply ink to the image with a sponge brayer or sponge dauber, the stamped image is clearer and crisper. If you were paying attention to Tuesday’s post, you saw this picture of Selina holding a sponge brayer – that was a foreshadowing of the tips to come.

Now the world makes sense, right? 🙂 Here’s a link to all the Distinktive stamps in Stampin’ Up!’s current catalogs (and upcoming Holiday Catalog):

Placement of Cutout Words

It’s really easy to cutout words with dies – the Big Shot makes that so easy. There are a couple of tips I want to offer to make this easier:

  • This “Wish” die crops in three pieces – make sure you hang on to all three:
    • the “W”
    • the “ish”
    • the dot over the “i”
  • Place the pieces over the panel (and make sure you like the placement) before gluing them down. Make sure they sit right where you want them and are balanced on the card. Study the placement before you start gluing. Use a light pencil line or sticky note if you need confirmation of perfect alignment.

Masked Sentiment

In the Broadway Birthday stamp set, the words “MAKE A” are underlined. While I tried it both ways (and the underlined words didn’t look bad), I really wanted my words to be free of the underline. There are several ways to accomplish that:

  • With a clean stamp, add tape over the line. Tap the stamp in ink. Remove the tape. Stamp it down.
  • Tap the stamp in ink. Add tape over the line. Stamp it down.
  • Use scissors to trim off the line – as long as you don’t think you’ll ever need it. I rarely cut my stamps, but sometimes it just makes sense.
