Hello with Love of Leaves

Sometimes the unused pieces of prior projects can come in handy as a great starting point for a card. Today’s card features a beautiful collections of greens that are a perfect way to say, “hello.” Here’s my card:

Love of Leaves Bundle, Stampin Up!, Brian KingDo you recognize the unused pieces on this card? The focal panel of green leaves is what was cropped out of the card I shared for last week’s InKing Royalty Blog Hop. Here’s a look at that card (you can click on the image below to see the original post for this project):

Love of Leaves, Gather Together, Stampin Up!, Brian KingCan you see how the green panel on today’s card was cropped right out of the middle of this card last week’s card? If you missed the how-to’s of this project, I hope you’ll check out the blog post here.

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Love of Leaves. I so love the Love of Leaves Bundle, new in Stampin’ Up!’s August – December 2020 Mini Catalog. The leaves are perfect for Fall, but they are just as gorgeous as other times of the year. Today’s card is a simple “hello” with beautiful greens and beautiful layers – there’s no time of year where this card isn’t perfect. Here’s a look at the Love of Leaves Bundle, which includes the Love of Leaves photopolymer stamp set and coordinating Stitched Leaves Dies: Love of Leaves Bundle, Stampin Up! 155195Two of my customers (independent of one another) asked with the big die in the bottom, right corner of the card is. I was able to point to a sample in the catalog but thought it might be fun to make a card with it to share with more than just time (if they missed it, then you may have missed it to). Here’s a closer look at the stitched pattern created with this fun die – I love that it pairs so well with the Stitched Leaves Dies: Love of Leaves Bundle, Stampin Up!, Brian King
  • Botany Lesson. When I was in High School, I aced my biology leaf collection – I still remember a lot about leaves that are indigenous to South Carolina (where I went to school). Some of these stumped me, though, so I went on a scavenger hunt to find out what leaves are represented here. The answer came from a Stampin’ Up! designer on a demonstrator-only Facebook group – AND there’s a good reason I couldn’t identify many of the leaves. The leaves depicted are mostly from other countries. Here’s a rundown of the leaves depicted in this set, which are showcased with a little artistic license from the artists:
    • Woolly Rambutan (Australia) – tall, thin leaf – first leaf on top row above
    • Red Carabeen (Australia) / Beech (Europe, Japan) – short, scalloped leaf – second leaf on top row above
    • Poplar – heart-shaped leaf – first leaf on bottom row above
    • Hawthorne (Europe, New England) – long stem, large leaf – second leaf on bottom row above
    • Horse Chestnut (Europe, Japan) – five-leaf compound leaf – third leaf on bottom row above
  • Gorgeous Greens. While there are four greens in the panel of stamped leaves on this card (it includes Shaded Spruce, Old Olive, Pear Pizzazz and Garden Green), I chose to accent the panel with just three of the greens – Pear Pizzazz (the panel with the stitched lines and small leaf), Shaded Spruce (the “hello” strip and frame for the Pear Pizzazz panel) and Old Olive (the base). If you like this gorgeous, green mix of Pear Pizzazz, Old Olive and Shaded Spruce, I hope you’ll save this for future reference: Stampin Up! 1. Great card but I really liked learning about the leaves! Thanks!

    Dear Brian,
I agree about your great card, too, but the leaf lesson was very interesting! We had poplar trees in the backyard in South Dakota growing up, but I certainly didn’t recognize the rest of the leaves. Thank you for the lesson! Down here in SW Florida, when someone asks if we miss “Fall”, we usually say “Oh, we had Fall the other day” ? Fall is a lovely season but very often it is interrupted with an early snow which disappears before winter sets in up north. That part I do not miss? The “hard to explain die” adds just the right amount of texture to your card! Thank you, Brian!

    • Thanks so much, Suzie! I was excited to learn about these leaves. So glad you like the card – I was prepared to emboss the Pear Pizzazz panel, but that die gave me exactly what I needed to add beautiful texture. Thanks! ♥

  3. Really beautiful and I love how you used the piercing texture!

  4. Not only did you present us with a great monochromatic card but we learned a lot about leaves. We had Horse Chestnut trees in New Haven, CT when I was a kid and when the chestnuts fell to the ground we would make a hole in them and make necklaces from them. Thanks for bringing back that fun memory.

  5. LOVE all the green tones mixed together. TFS

  6. Cool leaf lesson…love you card and all the texture. I just can’t throw away pieces left over either so I have a bucket of stuff and sometimes I dig through to retrieve!

    • Thanks, WIndy! Happy to share what I’ve learned (and what I’ve 100% trusted from the artist who shared). I love those pieces-parts – always a great starting point for future projects. ♥

  7. You’re going to think I’m crazy, but this card actually brought tears to my eyes. The beauty is amazing, and I equally love the first one you made. The greens are amazing as well, and you have captured nature’s beauty in one design. I also loved the “leaf learning”. Being from Chicago, I did recognize the poplar and the horse chestnut, because my aunt had a home in northern Illinois, and we saw those often. Thanks for the beauty abounds this morning. I’m going to try this on my day off Saturday. Hugs my friend.

  8. So Brian, I am speechless which is very unusual! This card is so very amazing. I love both of them, but there’s something about the shades of green… thank you for the Botany Lesson. I loved it. Thank you also for sharing the reason for the “hard to explain” die. I will use it thoughtfully after reading your post. You are brilliant, my friend!

  9. Oh you are so clever! very artsy and oh so pretty!

  10. Such a soft and peaceful card Brian…love the trio of greens!

  11. Beautiful cards, Brian! I’ve had that set on my Wish List and taken it off several times. When I viewed your post, I realized there was that cool texture piece and that has the set back on my Wish List. And, thank you for identifying the leaves for us!

  12. Well Brian I am from SC but got my Stampin’Up! feet wet while living in California. Have since returned to S.C. with my upline still in Cali. I love your botanical lesson and I too can not get enough of this bundle and suite! Hoping for it to survive and stay in circulation for a long time. As you have pointed out, it is versatile and can bridge all seasons. Love your technique!

  13. Brian, I’m looking and I can’t find on your pages. You did a tag with the postage stamp punch, you had 2 of them offset and I think coastal cabana was one of the colors. Do you still have that blog post? Thanks,
