Today is Martin Luther King Jr Day in the United States, a federal holiday that celebrates Dr. King’s birthday and honors his tireless work for civil rights.
While Dr. King is most widely known for his leadership against racial segregation and his fight for racial equality, he was also a passionate advocate for the poor and worked toward ending poverty for all people. He is deeply revered in Atlanta, the hometown of Ebenezer Baptist Church where he served as pastor. If you ever find yourself in Atlanta, both The King Center and the Center for Civil and Human Rights are powerful museums and learning centers well worth a visit.
At the heart of all of Dr. King’s teachings – as both a political leader and a pastor – are the themes of love, peace and hope. With those ideals in mind, I created a card to commemorate the day and showcase some truly meaningful products:
The sentiment, earth and dove are all stamped with Secret Sea ink using the Hope Love & Joy stamp set. The earth and dove are cropped with the coordinating dies – how perfect is that bold sentiment, and how beautiful are the additional images in this set? Here’s a look at the Hope Love & Joy Bundle, new in Stampin’ Up!’s Spring Mini Catalog:
I colored the earth with a mix of Cloud Cover and Soft Sea Foam Stampin’ Blends, adding just a touch of color while still coordinating with the Cloud Cover cardstock in the background. Here’s a closer look at the images at the heart of this card:
The sentiment panel is showcased over two patterns from the Peaceful Garden Designer Series Paper. These papers remain stunning well beyond the Christmas season, which is exactly why they weren’t retired at the end of December. Here’s a look at the colors and patterns in the Peaceful Garden Designer Series Paper:
The panel directly behind the sentiment was cropped using the Branching Out Dies, another carryover from the Holiday Mini Catalog. If you don’t yet have these dies, consider this a friendly nudge. 🙂 Here’s a look at the Branching Out Dies:
For this card, I used the fourth largest die. It wasn’t quite the height I needed for the design, so I performed a little die-cut surgery. I cut the die-cut piece down the middle and added a 3/4″ strip of paper between the two sections to achieve the height I wanted. Here’s a closer look at that adjustment:
Here’s a closer look at how this modified die supports the sentiment on my card:
To finish the card, I added five Cloud Cover gems from the 2025-2027 In Color Flat Pearls. Such a simple detail, but it adds a lovely finishing touch.
Last Thoughts
This card felt especially meaningful to create. The Hope Love & Joy bundle captures the spirit of Dr. King’s message beautifully, and I love how thoughtfully chosen products can help tell a bigger story. Cards like this remind me why handmade projects matter – they allow us to reflect, honor and share messages that truly count.
