Remembering Christmas Again

Today, I am sharing another project from my display board at Convention, and it’s another sneak peek at Remembering Christmas, a stamp set from the Holiday Catalog – available for purchase TOMORROW. Here’s the backstory – when Shannon West contacted me to be a presenter and told me that I’d be focusing on masculine cards, she sent me a photo of this set (that was before the catalog was released to demonstrators – shhh don’t tell anyone). At first, I said, “no thank you” because I couldn’t see the beauty of this set – to me, it just looked like a mounted deer head. That’s when the “I really like a challenge” side of me set in, and I said “yes” to the set. The challenge was then to make projects I liked with the set. Here’s one:Remembering Christmas, Woodgrain, Stampin' Up!, Brian King

Tips, Tricks and Reminders:

  • Kissy, Kissy. It’s a technique that’s as old as stamping, but the effect is GREAT! I inked up my dear deer with a light shade of ink (Pool Party). I then inked up my Woodgrain background stamp with a dark shade of ink (Midnight Muse) and pressed the woodgrain stamp onto the deer head. When I pulled the two stamps apart, I stamped the deer head onto Whisper White Cardstock. The woodgrain image appears on the deer but only on the shape of the deer. It’s really pretty cool. If you’d care to see another project I did last year with stamp kissing, click here.
  • Playing with Framelits. I really love to find new ways to use framelits to build new shapes and outlines for my projects. To create a unique band for this card, I cut a white strip of paper and then ran it through the center of the Deco Label Framelits. Rather than have one continuous band behind the Deco Label cutout, I allowed the band to break and maintain the shapes of the edges of the label. It allows the shape of the label to shine.
  • Puzzling. Have you tried the new technique called puzzling? It’s all the rage in Europe these day. OK, so I made that up. I also made up this technique, but it has worked well for me before. After I stamped the deer head, I cropped it with a circle from the Circles Collection Framelits, allowing the antlers to be trimmed right of his head. I then snipped around the antlers that were removed from the circle, added some glue and then slid them right back into place. They fit like a puzzle. I created this technique when I was playing around with Pleasant Poppies earlier this year (to see that post, click here).

Wow Brian!! All 3 posts (this one and the two you reference therein) are brilliant!!! One characteristic (of many) that I admire about you is your boldness. You combine great colors and great techniques that yield consistently striking cards!! Now that I really understand the kissing, you have given me awesome ways to try it!! Your posts really come to life… your descriptions and your witty humor jump off the page!! Thank you for helping me smile, laugh, & learn something new every morning!! 🙂

  2. No kidding I wouldn’t have guessed you cropped off those antlers with your circle and re applied. Great job! I do like your broken band of Whisper White, clever you are!

  3. I was impressed with the “Kissing” with the folder but what I kept looking at was that white band that you carried across . That had me getting closer to the computer to investigate and ask “what did he do to get that effect? Now getting back to the “Kissing”…. I really do need to use that more ! I went back to look at what you did with the Mixed Bunch flowers …. and it gave me a couple of ideas to try . Then I had to ponder over the snipped antlers …oh the wonder of it all !!!

  4. You’re quite a “kisser”, Brian! I keep meaning to buy a solid image stamp large enough to do this technique. Maybe this one is it.

  5. Another gorgeous masculine card Brian, I’m so glad they asked you to do this display for the convention. And you are GREAT with your paper snipping scissors, really!! I love the white band across the card, fabulous detail, thanks for all of this wonderful collection of very beautiful masculine cards!!

  6. You have done a brilliant job using this set. Nice card. I’m not a fan of this set quite yet, just haven’t warmed up to it. Maybe in the future. I know I have your great cards to refer back to if need be.

  7. I don’t even know what to say about this one. Everyone else has posted the accolades I would have given this card so I guess I just say “thanks you deer boy” and ditto! LOL

  8. That split band idea is nifty, B! A BK exclusive technique, now shared with the world. I believe I will use that on my next card, thanks!

  9. Great job with this stamp, Brian. I think it’s a challenging image, but I think a lot of my customers will like it – we live in hunting country. I downloaded similar MDS images around Christmas last year.

  10. Brian–you tricksy, tricksy man, you! I LOVE this card and when I saw your preview yesterday, I thought you had fussy cut the whole deer. Every time you post, my shopping list gets longer!

    • Nothing makes me happier to hear when people’s shopping list is getting longer? Even if they aren’t buying from me (and why not?!), I am happy to know that I have shared something that inspires them. This stuff just makes me happy.

  11. Brian, *you* are just SO creative! Love the creative way that you used your framelit with the band and your circle punch with the deer’s antlers. Thanks for sharing!

  12. I love what you did with the white band in the middle. Wonderful card!
