Halloween Card with Spooky Cat

Yesterday’s project for the InKing Royalty Blog Hop was super-sweet and fun (if you missed it, you can see it here).  While I used a sentiment from the same Seasonal Chums stamp set on today’s card, this card is decidedly more spooky than yesterday’s.  Here’s my oh-so-spooky card:

Spooky Cat, Seasonal Chums, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, fun Halloween cardThis week’s Paper Players challenge is Spooky Clean and Simple.  Although my background is layered with lots of circles that took some time to build, the overall layout of my card is pretty Clean and Simple – and the card is DEFINITELY Spooky.  πŸ™‚  Here’s the banner for the challenge that inspired my card:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Spooky Cat Bundle.  Oooh-eeee!  I adore the Spooky Cat bundle – if you are looking to make a spooky Halloween project, this set’s got it all!  There are so many Halloween-themed images – a witch’s hat, an owl, the cat, some potions, a rat and some great sentiments.  Here’s a look a the bundle:

And here are some other projects I’ve made with items in this bundle – both Halloween-themed and other (you can click on the photos to see my original posts):Message in a Bottle, Spooky Cat, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, Halloween card, GDP100 Spooky Cat, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, Halloween cardSorry for Everything, Cat Punch, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, sympathy card

  • Fun Background.  It would be hard to not notice, but the background of my card is filled with colorful polka dots.  Did you see them?  Want to know how I created them?  I stamped the cat on multiple sheets of colored cardstock (Lemon Lime Twist, Wisteria Wonder, Smoky Slate and Pumpkin Pie) and the punched out parts of the sentiment with a 3/4″ Circle punch.  I layered each one on a 1″ circle punched with Basic Black.  It created a super-fun backdrop for the spooky cat, don’t you think? • Three Colors.  While this card also features Basic Black and Smoky Slate, three bright, cheery colors really stand out here.  I love this combination of green, orange and purple (and have used it several times).  If you are inspired by this combination of colors, please save this:Stampin' Up! 1. I love your creation!! That car and punch are my favorite in the Holiday Catalig and using the stamp for your circles is brilliant! Love, love, love!

    • Thanks, Jackie! I had a lot of fun with it – I struggled with how to finish the card after I built the background but am, ultimately, happy with how it turned out. <3

  2. Oh Brian . . . I love the words in the circled frames. That looks so great. I especially like that they are punched. When I first saw the card, I thought you die cut all those circles, one at a time.
    Have a great Thursday.

  4. Totally fun background you clever guy! Adorable Halloween card!

    • Thanks, Linda! I went a little overboard on these polka dots – the adrenaline kicked in, and I couldn’t stop. πŸ™‚ Always nice to hear from you.

  5. That is such a “cat-tastic” idea to use the text for the polka dot background. Great colors!

  6. What a genius idea for creating the perfect background for the Spooky cat. It’s a great card Brian. The layout, the color palette everything works so well together. Awesome job

  7. Love today;s card. It took me a minute to figure out how you created the dynamic dots for the background. You’re so clever. So the big question is what are you going to do with all the holey cats?

  8. Love, love, love the colors in this card! The Lemon Lime Twist has become one of my favorite colors evah! However, I’ve had a difficult time finding appropriate ways to use it and this is the first card I’ve seen using it as a base that brought a huge smile to my face! PERFECT! I am also a bit envious of how perfectly you have all those circles placed. You constantly amaze me Brian and I love being amazed! Thank you.

    • Thanks so much, Grace! I’m so glad this card brought a smile to your face – it was certainly fun to make. I’ll give you a little hint about the “perfectly placed” circles – they aren’t perfectly placed – the imbalances are hidden behind the square panel with the cat. πŸ™‚

  9. What can I say? The stamped dots are cute and clever! Another hit!

  10. Brian this background technique is unique, the first thought I had, how can I case. . . perhaps a Valentine card. Excellent placement of the dots, perfect stamp to use on this card.

  11. VERY clever to use the cat print as a background…I kept looking at it and thought “Where have I seen that before?”, LOL! Clever and interesting! Thanks for playing with the Players this week with your creation!

  12. Brilliant idea for your background! Well worth the time I’ll bet it took you! That’s a fantastic image and, yes, spooky too! Thanks for joining in the Halloween fun over at The Paper Players this week!

  13. You are the King of DAP. I love love love how you made your own DAP with the sentiment in the circles and I really like the black border! Such a modern POP!

  14. Love this Brian – such a creative way to use the text stamp in those coloured polka dots. Thanks for sharing with us over at The Paper Players this week!
