We are kicking off a fun color challenge at FabFriday today – we are showcasing the gorgeous combination of Powder Pink, Night of Navy, Soft Sky and So Saffron. That’s four colors! I reached back to my Annual Catalog to make a fun invitation with the Marquee Messages stamp set. There’s coloring, snipping, layering and some other fun surprises in this clean, Spring-ready invitation. Here’s my card:
And here’s the banner for the challenge that inspired my card:
Tips, Tricks and Reminders
- Multiple Inks. Archival Basic Black ink is my go-to black ink. Unless I’m using my alcohol-based Stampin’ Blends (when I reach for Tuxedo Black Memento ink), I always use my Archival Basic Black pad. I stamped this image from Marquee Messages with Archival Basic Black on Thick Whisper White, So Saffron, Soft Sky and Powder Pink.
My plan was to cut out all the images, color blocked as shown in the final card. BUT…there was no way I was going to snip around all the slats that run down the left side of the blue base for this sign (and I didn’t want to leave the panel white), so…I stamped the image and “YOU ARE” sentiment with Tuxedo Black Memento ink on the Thick Whisper White panel and colored the central panel with the Light Pool Party Stampin’ Blends Marker – still such a smooth effect. I colored the slats along the left side with the Dark Night of Navy Stampin’ Blends Marker.
- Shining Lights. No marquee is complete without shining lights. From the start of this card, I knew I wanted my big arrow to be yellow. Thank you, So Saffron. It still felt a little flat, so I grabbed my Fine-Tip Glue Pen and dropped a little glue into each of the dots along the edge of the arrow. You might not have seen this added element on the card (they are small), so here’s a closer look at the finished arrow:
Fun, right? It’s a small element that adds a lot to this card. I was inspired by the glue resist card I shared last week – you can see that here.
- Lay It Out Before You Glue It Down. There are three snipped elements that layer over one another for a fun paper-pieced project. Be careful, though, to think through all the layers before you start gluing down the elements. The sentiment panel (with the snipped stars) needs to be glued down before the arrow is glued down since the arrow overlaps. You’re welcome.

Super sweet and retro invitation. Perfect choice on the DSP.
Thanks so much, Mary! The paper gave me the Night of Navy color for the challenge but also helped the soft colors to pop on the card. Glad you like it. <3
Thanks so much for explaining what you do with every card!!! I have learned a lot!!
I’m so happy to share, Maxine. Sometimes my thoughts are straightforward, and sometimes they are all over the board. I’m glad you enjoy my explanations. <3
Oh, new item on my agenda for today. Hope I can create something as cute as your card!
Awww…thanks, Dianne! It was a challenge to incorporate all four colors, but I had fun with it. Can’t wait to see what you make.
Wow that DSP worked perfect with this set and a great blend of those colors.
Thanks so much, Windy! I needed to dark paper to ground the soft colors a bit. Glad you like it.
Whew!? For a minute there I thought you had glittered those light bulbs! Stunning card, Brian! Thanks for sharing all of the details!
There’s no chance I’d add glitter. That’s just silly! 🙂 So happy to share, Elisha!
Thanks for the explanation on how to make the card. I have this stamp set but haven’t used it much because of the coloring required. I love that you stamped the different part on colored card stock.
The images are really easy to snip – hope that helps solve the coloring issue. 🙂 It’s a really fun set, Donna! <3
Perfect card for these colors! Gotta, love the Blends for making coloring so smooth and pretty.
Thanks, Katrina! I didn’t know what I was missing before I dipped my toe into alcohol markers. Glad you like the card. <3
Love the Tutti-Fruiti DSP! I’d love a stack of this pattern. I am going to have to try the glue resist technique soon! Great card.
Thanks so much, Sue! I agree that this paper is wonderful, and I love this page. Had fun with the glue. Hope you enjoy it, too! <3
I used your one-tip glue idea for my card for this challenge! Love the way it turned out. Thanks for sharing!
Brian every single time you use this stamp set you create an quirky fun card. You really nailed this challenge.
Thanks so much, Robbye! <3
The color combo is awesome! Love how the sign looks!
Thanks, Linda! It’s a fun sign – wasn’t sure it would work with these soft colors, but I’m happy with how it turned out. <3
Love the colors of the challenge and your great take on using them. The recipient of this card will be thrilled. Have a very Happy Easter!
Thanks so much, HJ! I enjoyed playing with these soft colors. <3 Easter was wonderful. Hope yours was, too!
